According to the manual this camera should retain date/time info for a few
hours to allow changing of batteries.

The other day I discovered this was not happening. In fact, the camera won't
even work until I reset the time/date after changing batteries. The camera
also loses the MP setting on changing batteries.

Is there another battery somewhere in the camera that allows retention of
this info? I don't see anything in the manual but I know some digital
cameras have a secondary battery to retain info upon changing batteries.

This camera is about 5 years old and I know computer BIOS batteries begin
failing around 5 years. I've been using the same rechargeable batteries
(Rayovac Hybrid rechargeables) and they still work as they did when I first
purchased them as far as the actual functioning of the camera.

TIA,

Wayne,
There probably is a secondary battery inside the camera, but you might
not be able to get to it without taking to a camera shop.  Any "pro"
camera shop will know, and would be able to replace it for you on the
spot.
Good luck,

Thanx, Jeff.

I suspected there might be a hidden battery, but I can't find mention of one
anywhere - manual, fuji web site or web search.

There are 2 small screws on the bottom of the camera retaining what looks
like a removable cover but I've been reluctant to investigate.

Some cameras don't have a battey, but a capacitor. The capacitor will keep
info for a short while. If the capacitor fails you will get the symptoms you
describe.

If your camera does have a capacitor then getting it fixed probably isn't an
option.

MG,

I sent an inquiry to Fujifilm  the same day I posted here.  I got a reply
with a phone number to call and a call to them confirmed that it is a
capacitor that has failed. It can be repaired but given the age of the
camera and what I can get today for what I paid for the S5000, I'm not going
to bother. In fact, I can get a pretty decent compact camera for what it
will cost to repair the capacitor that will meet my needs.

It works fine except for resetting the time/date and resolution every time I
change batteries and this is no big deal since I'm a strictly a recreational
photographer.
