Canon vs Nikon, the final word?

Dudley Hanks - 16 May 2008 14:54 GMT That's right!
I know this is one of those burning issues that people just can't make up their minds on. Which camera takes better pics, the Canon A720 or the Nikon D3?
Or, is there yet an unidentified contender out there that can kick both of these apertures?

I'll post the entries, without EXIF data or any other hints on my site. Then, guests can vote on their favourite via e-mail ballot.
What will be the deciding factor, the camera or the photog?

Which camera takes better pics, the Canon A720 or the Nikon > D3? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am certain I can shoot nice photos with any camera that has a decent lens, including all the Canon and Nikon cameras. I am a Canon user, but I think what's far more important than the camera one uses is the photographer behind the camera. Learn to use the controls on whatever camera you buy and how to compose photos well and you'll be fine. Learn about the importance of lighting and how shutter speed and aperture effect photos and you'll be fine regardless of which camera you decide to buy.

I agree... however the better photographers tend to be enthusiasts ( or turn pro) and end up buying better equipment.
So "all the best photographers use the D3 or D300" (sorry don't know the equivalent Cannon models) Therefore many who aspire to doing better photographs will see what the great and the good do (and the kit they use) and also aspire to the D3 or D300. This is why the major DSLR companies associate with the "best" photographers.
First you have to be able to see a good picture. That is the photographers skill irrespective of camera
Then you have to know how to take the photograph Again that is the photographers skill largely irrespective of camera
Where the camera comes in is: the better the camera/lens the more options you have for taking the photo.
If I had a good 600mm lens and a D3 I could take pictures in the evening I have no hope of taking with my 18-70 and D70
It is a case of those with more art and skill can get the best results form the camera. The better the spec of the camera the more they can do.
As it is I haven't used the D70 to it's fullest potential yet so whilst a D3 would make me feel better I doubt it would improve my photographs much other than the technicalities of less noise and more resolution and possibly better colour etc

> That's right! > [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > Good Luck, > Dudley As far as I am concerned, I believe that with any major brand that has stood the test of time (Canon and Nikon both qualify) the photographer using the camera has a far greater effect on the quality of the pictures than what brand.
Also, even between models, the big variables are in automatic modes. If you use the cameras in manual mode than both brands are pretty much equivalent, and between models in each line they will be about the same in image quality.
Also, the difference in image quality with various lenses, the differences are most apparent at the fastest aperture. Stop down a few stops, and most lenses these days will be about the same.

Have you ever heard of satire? Tongue in cheek?
I'm not talking about a literal comparison, just a fun little contest to test the photographer instead of the camera.
Hope you'll join the fun.

user@domain.invalid - 18 May 2008 14:20 GMT >just a fun little contest to > test the photographer instead of the camera. Now here's the REAL idea: a CONTEST!
The rules are: you must submit 20 photos, in pairs, two of each subject, taken within 2 minutes of each other. One must be made by a Canon camera and lens, the other by a Nikon camera and lens of similar price and functionality (i.e. if one has IS the other must have VR, or both not have it, and f/numbers must match as must focual lengths and zoom ranges). The pictures must be made by the same photographer. The two are compared. And may the two systems tie! (Which, of course, they will, in fair contest.)
I'm not running this contest, you understand, just suggesting it.

But the A720 is no slouch for a sub $200 camera that you can put in a jacket pocket. Given the skills of most of the posters here, it's doubtful they could turn in a decent photo with either. They'd rather masturbate over their photo equipment than learn how to use it.

It's a hint as to the potential of the A720.

They'd rather > masturbate over their photo equipment than learn how to use it. I submitted a shot with my RAZR V3c 1.3 Megapixel cell phone. It's funny, the exif data always says 1/21 second shutter speed and reports no focal length, f/stop or ISO. I guess it adjusts ISO to get the exposure right. All photos also say "no flash" :-)

I thought not.
The challenge stands.
