Canon A40 problem

Yeah, I know it's old, but it suits my purpose. I just upgraded to XP from
W2K (see, I like old stuff) and I can't get the camera installed. Not only
from the installation CD, but from drivers downloaded from the Internet.
The driver is A40WI410EN.exe, and is described as a driver for Windows
ME/XP. I also have a driver that is described as for Windows 98/2000.
Neither works.

What happens is that the driver installation finishes up, and I am told the
installation will continue when I plug the camera in. But, it doesn't.
Nothing happens.

I tried using the wizard and pointing it to the .inf files in the
installation folders, but that doesn't work, either.

I had a time getting it installed in W2K as well - same problem. I can't
remember what I did to solve it - too long ago.

Ideas?

Yes

Buy a card reader, they are cheap and faster than copying from the camera,
and there is never any danger of the battery going flat during download.

My computer has a card reader built in. Getting the card out of the camera
is a PITA, and I don't like swapping it back and forth. Also, I want to be
able to use the utilities like PhotoStitch.

You shouldn't need to load a driver for winxp although canon do supply
one, the same driver comes with xp. I don't have any canon software
loaded in my current setup for my A95. I gave my A40 to my son and I
don't believe he loaded any canon software.
As far as photo stitch is concerned, I'm not sure if you can install
only that, however, photostitch is a separate program and you can use it
with a card reader.

Absolutely right, Roy G. I believe that I paid $5 for mine several years
ago, but a dollar was worth a dollar back then. You can still get decent
ones for $10, though. The OP won't need one that accepts 10,000 types of
cards or one that operates at blinding speed. I use only CF and SD
cards, and download speed has never been an issue for me. The slowest
readers ever made are still faster than one-hour photo shops.

Not really true.

The Card Reader built into my Compaq Presario, which has an Intel Dual Core
running at 3 GHz and 7 x USB 2 ports and 2 x Firewire Ports, seems to be USB
1.

I think Compaq / HP must have got them for free out of somebody's Dumpster /
Skip. They would have done their reputation a lot more good by leaving them
there.

30 minutes to download 400 Mb of pics, so my cheap litlle Card Reader
quickly got plugged in again and did the job in under 2 Mins.

I've never had a computer with a built-in card reader; my Canon iP6700
has two--I assume CF and SD--but I'm not about to use them, as my cheapo
reader does just fine. My present computer will celebrate its fourth
birthday in 12 days, so its replacement will probably have slots, but I
can't see using them, as they couldn't be as convenient as Cheapo.
Thanks for the warning about the built-ins, but we are in complete
agreement about not downloading from the camera.
