Is the "super tight DoF" the reason why the tail feathers aren't in
focus? And why do the rump feathers have the same amount of blur as
the background?

Perhaps motion blur caused by the bird not standing still?

You must be a Canon shooter content with mediocrity and poor optics?  That

Your enthusiasm for your Nikon D3 is amusing. We Canon users do manage
to get along fine without a Nikon D3. In my opinion, its not so much the
camera, as the person using it, that's most important in terms of taking
interesting photos.

A good photographer can shoot nice photos with any reasonably good
camera, regardless of who manufactured it, and that includes P&S
cameras. So, Rita? Are you a good photographer?

No way. We Mac users just like to get work done on our computers rather
than having to be paranoid about malware and installing updates every
time there's a day with an even number in it like Windows users do.

You seem to be lost in the WinBlows anti-Apple 90's propaganda FUD myth.

You obviously have not heard of CS3, PS Elements, Lightroom, Aperture,
GraphicConverter, Gimp, PhotoGPSEditor, Capture NX, the various Nik
packages & the useful, but limited iPhoto.

Linux can be run on all Macs with all that offers.

... and with the current Apple offerings there are several methods of
compromising and running some variation of Window (XP, 2000, or the
dreaded Vista), or all at the same time if needed. try that with your
Dell.

It is ready for prime time for the computer literate.  It is also ready
for prime time for anybody who has a computer literate friend who can
set it up for the average person.  It requires very little maintenance
after that and is easy to use and causes less problems for the average
users.

Been like that for 15-years and will always be like that.  This is why Linux
will never be able to compete and has always taken a back seat to Windows.

I have serious doubts about that. Developers are not interested in
creating version of Linux which is easy to use, just to name one reason.

Does your view not preclude the likelyhood of commercial corps
finalising a prime-time version to make $$$?

The version of Linux I use was specifically created to make it
difficult for the user to tell whether they were using Linux or MS
Windows, so that secretaries etc. could easily switch systems, since
they tend to be trained in MS Windows, whereas the computer scientists
they support mostly use Linux. Seems to work well. I also note that
some of the local system vendors and are now converting their
customers to Ubuntu Linux because they say it's easier to install and
support.

I tried Ubuntu (Ultimate) and didn't like the user interface. Huge icons
taking a lot of space on the 1024x768 screen of my notebook for
starters. Then I could not figure out how to get things done, i.e.
launching applications, working with them etc.

In the end I started wondering why I should punish myself with such an
operating system, which also didn't run most applications I needed
(would have had to switch to the Linux counterparts which were inferior
in my opinion).

Every couple of years I give a try at Linux and end up giving up. I've
discussed Linux in the past years in newsgroups and received angry
replies from Linux users. Been called 'wintroll' and been told 'we don't
want you'.

That's just it; Apple finally got their act together and started using
Intel.  We PC folks have been using dual, quad, and 8-way Xeons years before
Apple got a clue.  Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with Mac if all
you want is a pretty desk top ornament.  Gotta admit, that's one sweet

You're full of sh.t, as usual.  Intel hasn't been making "8-way Xeons"

Hey, I have been a PC Windows user for many years and poo pood Mac.  Now
I use a PC platform running Linux.  Linux is more secure, more stable,
and faster than Windows albiet you have to chase down hardware drivers
and be more selective of software but it is free.  It is free of $$$ and
free of copy protection and all of the bullshit.

That said, if I was a fan of Notebooks and the additional money did not
matter much I would look at a Mac Powerbook today.  I think that Mac OSX
is more stable and a better OS than Windows.  The main thing is cost.
But under Mac you can use Gimp, Open Office, Thunderbird, and Firefox
all without charge.

My beef is with the Nikon vs Canon nonsense. I in no way intend to
criticize your photographic skills which certainly exceed mine and
suspect you would do equally well with other comparable models. Now
maybe you're just kidding and I was a bit grumpy when I posted so just

Of course I'm just kidding.  Nobody really cares what a photographer shoots
with.  I like both Nikon and Canon, just gotta use Nikkors on the Canon if
you want to get the most out of it.

I'll look into it.  Since I got pretty much unlimited bandwidth now I'll be
bringing my fans all the best under one roof.  I'm thinking about posting

that everyone with get a chuckle from.  The old D3 is really getting a
serious workout and I haven't had much time for my fans.

All is made up - keep up the good work. Wish we could say for the
