I have checked and there is a Yahoo group "digital photography". I
joined the group but have not recieved any messages yet- do not know
how active it is. I will report after a few days.

I belong to a number of Yahoo groups, and moderate two.  There is
occasional spam that slips through.  Most groups are set up with
messages themselves NOT moderated, but require membership to join the
group and many moderate membership.  Sure, a "new member" occasionally
slips through and posts spam, but that member is then kicked out.
Someone could indeed keep rejoining under new names, but this has not
been a problem so far.

Yahoo groups allow you the choice of receiving posts via email, or
reading them from the group web site.  For really active groups there
is a digest version where the messages are bundled 25 at a time and
sent out.  However, for a group with as many posts as rpd, even that
may be impractical, and web reading may be the best solution. I have
selected the digest option for the digital photography group, and will
let this group know how that works out.

Yahoo isn't so bad if there is no suitable newsgroup available. Along
with my newsgroups I use 16 Yahoo groups by email. It is much easier
and quicker to read them by email. The key is to use a client
application that can thread email so it looks just like a Usenet
group. I can't remember the last time I had to read a group or forum
on the web.

My group covers all Olympus DLSRs in case you are interested. There are
other Yahoo groups covering other brands as well.

Just block Google.

Yes, yahoo-groups are ok. Except for the Advertising they attach to
every message posted.
But as long as I'm not sure that they wont be taken over by Microsoft
soon I won't attach to them more than I'm already.
When Microsoft takes Yahoo, I'll be off of flickr soon. And google won't
be the alternative, I think.

You are aware of the terms of service with the groups and that you give up
your right to your "intellectual property" to that which you post?

Don't use the web interface - set up email correctly. There are no
adverts in the group emails unless you consider the list of links at
the end of the message to be adverts.

I don't care who owns the service as long as it works.
