Two DSLR's fail on a single spacewalk?

What kind of crappy hardware you got there?

Should have stuck a little P&S in a pocket as a backup.

Just Me. I was watching real-time NASA TV of the spacewalk where they were
inspecting the SARG rotary joint. When it came time to take pictures of the
metal filings inside the SARG the camera locked up and wouldn't work. The
other spacewalker was way on the other end of the station and so both
astronaghts translated half way to hand off the other camera which didn't
have a flash. When spacewalker got that camera back to the SARG area it
wouldn't work either. So: No pictures of the damage to the SARG.

Well, space is not exactly the environment for which the cameras were
designed, so you need to cut them some slack.

Or a nice chunky Hasselblad 500EL.

The problem with the Hasselblad is they could only see the pictures after
they landed. Not what they need.

Picky.
So, they could take a free-fall qualified mini-lab.

They can take along a developing tank and develop the negatives on board
then use their TV cameras to transmit the images to Earth.
