i am currently using the ef 22-55 mm f/4-5.6 for portraits and indoor sports
(mostly high school wrestling ) , i was looking at this lense and was wondering
if anyone is using it , would it be be good for doing indoor action sports ?,
it seems like it would work better than the one i am now using as it is a
faster lense ?

thanks.

Do you *need* the wide angle..  The lens is good, but obviously you always have
to be very close to catch all the action.  I guess if you're shooting a large
team posed against a wall in a small gym, the wide angle would come in handy.

You also express some concern over lens speed..

Have you considered the EF 24-70 f/2.8L ??

You'll lose the extra wide angle, but it will perform much the same as your
current lens and have a much wider aperture.

it would come in handy for as you said group shots, as far as it being to wide
i thought that perhaps i could crop alot of back ground stuff out as long as my
subject was centered in the shot (its not that easy with wrestling , although i
have alot more confidence with my 10d compared to the pro is 90 with the
shutter delay .

the  EF 24-70 f/2.8L looks like a great lense but alot more $ , any other
suggestions ,
thanks for takeing the time to reply.

I have the 17-40 4.0L and would not use it for indoor sports. I use it for
outside scenery. I do use mt 28-135 IS for my daughters basketball games.
From the sidelines it is plenty wide enough for my taste. I have tried the
17-40 on some occasions and found I got way too much court and it was less
personal. Dave
