I recently took about 700 pictures with my Canon 20D using a single 2Gig
card.
When I uploaded the files to my computer I noticed that some file names
were of the type _MG_1242.JPG while some others were something like
IMG_1427.JPG.
Why do most file names begin with an underscore _, while others are
preceded with the letter I (as in IMG). Why are they labelled
differently? How do the files differ?

Are you simply ignoring the replies you got when you
recently posted the identical question but with the subject
"Various JPG File Names"?

Very odd.

His last message in that thread was unanswered:

I can only guess maybe some of your shots were in Auto or easy modes?

Then he should not have been in such a hurry.

It is really anybody's guess as to what went on.  The OP should open the
files in PS to find out what the profile really is.

And not multi-post and ignore questions that are on point.

Sorry. I didn't see my original post listed so I assumed that it was not
uploaded.

If you set Thunderbird to View-> Threads with unread, and also choose
"Threaded" under Sort by, you'll be unlikely to miss replies to any of
your posts.

Done!

I think that is the explanation since some pictures were taken in
program mode, while some were done in Landscape.

Sorry about that but the post never appeared on my computer so I assumed
that it was not uploaded.
