Should Photoshop open ORF files?

Just bought an Olympus E-400 DSLR and shot my first batch of pictures in
Olympus RAW File ORF. Puzzled that Photoshop (and PE5) will not open
them, even though Irfanview, for example, does.

Searching the web, this site implies that Photoshop should.

Go to the Adobe site and downlaod the ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) plug-in, which
specifies the appropriate ORF file for your Camera.  There will be
instructions about which Folder to save it into.

It can take some time for Adobe to produce ACRs for new Cameras.

I should have also said that Adobe can be a bit remiss in not providing new
ACRs for older versions of PS.

In which case you will need to use an independant converter, to convert and
save, before beginning any editing in PS.

That's what I fear may happen when I buy the 1D mkIII - my CS2 might not RAW
convert.

I don't know how or if Adobe will update CS2 for new cameras. But in the
meantime you could convert to DNG, I believe, but there again I am not
sure how/when it's updated. And there's DPP, too, but my version won't
save as DNG.

CS2 will never be able to convert 1D III CR2 raw files. It is frozen.

The 4.1 DNG Converter, now available, converts 1D III CR2s to DNGs,
and they can be opened by PS CS + ACR 2.4 and by PS CS2 + ACR 3.x.

But why anyone who can afford a 1D III doesn't buy CS3, if only for
ACR 4.1, which is a spectacular improvement over ACR 3.x, beats me!
(Or buy Lightroom instead when 1.1 arrives).

I don't try to guess at folk's personal buying curves. Mine are complex
enough....

From the press release: "The new Camera Raw 4.1 plug-in supports 13
digital cameras including the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Fuji FinePix S5
Pro, Nikon D40x, Olympus E-410, Olympus SP-550 UZ, Sigma SD14, Phase One
H 20, Phase One H 25, Phase One P 20, Phase One P 21, Phase One P 25,
Phase One P 30 and Phase One P 45."

Photoshop CS2 (and Elements 5) will support E400 ORFs directly using
the ACR 3.6 (or the later ACR 3.7) raw converter. This needs to be
downloaded from the Adobe site.

With Photoshop CS, the DNG route can be used. Use a late DNG Converter
to create DNGs, then these can be opened in ACR 2.4.

Many thanks for the advice and links, Barry and Roy. Much appreciated. I
will do as you suggested.

(I did use Adobe Master eventually to convert my initial efforts to jpeg).

(2nd attempt to send this. first posting disappeared).
