Why do some of my lenses not work on D70s?

Open to speculation here...

I have a 1st-generation Nikon 80-200F2.8 D lens.  Purchased new about
10 years ago for about $900 and used for years on various Nikons.

This lens used to work fine on my D70s as recently as New year's.
However, I took it out of my camera bag at a school function last
week, and it would no longer work on my D70s.   Camera just kept
flashing an 'FEE" error,  It will neither meter nor autofocus.  (And
yes, the aperture ring is closed all the way to F22 and locked).

At the same time, this lens still works fine on my fiancee's D80, and
my N90s and my 8008s cameras.  Just doesn't want to work on my D70s.

Some of my other lenses seem to work fine on the D70s, including:

18-70 dx
18-135 dx
75-300 F4.5-5

But the following quit working:
24 f1.8
50 f1.8
85 F1.8
28-85 F3.5

I'm guessing I broke something on the D70s.  A month ago I
accidentally put a Sigma 400mm lense on incorrectly, and really
struggled to get it off.  When I finally got it off (and I was pushing
it because I was starting a whale watch trip), I broke some little tab
- I thought from the 400mm lens.   Perhaps it was from the camera
instead though.

Now I've got a trip coming up to Hawaii in about 2 weeks, and I'd like
to see if I can get this situation fixed.

You probably broke off the little tab shown here:

I don't know if you may be able to effect a temporary repair by taping
what remains of the tab in the position it should be in with a non "G"
lens mounted in position.

hmmm... - oops that was my mistake.

Yep, that's it.  I've broken off that little thingy.   Now I wonder
how long and how expensive it is to get that sort of thing fixed.

Sigh.

Oh well, gives me that excuse I needed to go get myself a D80 or D200
before going to Hawaii!!!   (But money I could have spent on a
18-200VR lens instead.)

Thanks for the info!

I'm sure Berkowitz will here to explain how the ever evolving Nikon
lensmount standard is superior to Canon's

Naw, but if you are considering the 18-200VR you would be better off
stuffing the lens mount of you dSLR with prosciutto ham since the bokeh is
mind blowingly better.

Rats!  That may have been my problem all along.  I'll try to get
some prosciutto soonest if bokeh ham really beats bokeh raton.

You needed an excuse???

Egypt slammed a contest to
name the Seven New Wonders
of the World. The Pyramids
are the only one of the ancient
wonders still in existence.
At least they were before
the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
was brought out of retirement
for Saddam's farewell party.

It helped.

Bought a D200 kit with the 18-200VR lens.

Also found out Tempe Camera Repair can repair the D70s fairly easily,
so I get to have both cameras for Hawaii.

As far as the 18-200 goes, it doesn't have what I'd call
buttery-smooth manual focusing, but there is no hint of lens creep.
