There are doubters on this one, so far the only person to have spoken about the incident is the photographer. No interviews with little Johnny or his Nanny.

But now that you mention it, yes it is a bit odd that no other witnesses were quoted in the story. Just the photographer and various consulted experts.

oops, I may have jumped the gun a bit quickly there - moving footage! (actually dated earlier this month)

Thanks. I suppose I should have felt sorry for the pigeon, but I just had to laugh while watching it.
My co-worker raised the question of whether this will become a habit for that particular pelican; pigeon-hunting has got to be easier than chasing fish.

Are birds known to be cannibalistic, very often?

I suspect though that we had a bird which was just very hungry and took a one off shot at something nearby.... I'm going to be pedantic now :O)
cannibal
noun 1. a person who eats human flesh, esp. for magical or religious purposes, as among certain tribal peoples. 2. any animal that eats its own kind. adjective 3. pertaining to or characteristic of a cannibal. 4. given to cannibalism.
This is what bugged me with the mad cow thing. They deliberately fed cows with other animals, including other cows if I remember right. A bit like mincing up dead people, shoving them in with beef in a pie then wondering what the fuss is about when you're found out.

Ah, but according to QI, if I remember rightly, only dogs are actually different species to each other, all the rest are just variation on a theme... or something :O)

Aye, I know what you mean, not that my brain would accept anything new lately, and that is exactly how I have always thought about it until Fry and co gave the suggestion that only dogs have different species. Real problem is I can't recall if they included birds, but I think they did.

I was trying to recall the name of the disease. Excuse for the feeding was something like animals nibble on bones if they find them in the wild, or some such crap.

Errr...I mean, uh, quite an interesting scientific record of a natural predator-pray struggle that deserves further study.

Most likely a photographer saw it happen but didn't get a photo, so he created one later. Notice that the pigeon is strangely calm in the picture, just sitting there quietly in the pelican's bill. Also, there are pretty sharp boundaries between the pigeon and the pelican - perfect for a Photoshop job, which is most likely what this is.

I think what we may have is an opportunist photographer. I have done a bit of hunting and every mention of the recent one that I can find mentions Cathal McNaughton by name and he is a press photographer

jack - 26 Oct 2006 14:34 GMT :: and someone happened to be in the right place at the right :: time with a camera: : : Better than eating small dogs. Personally, I hate dogs (and all the crap they leave behind for me and my children to step in). Anyway, what's wrong with you people? Can't you all see that the photo is a fake? Look at the obvious 'cut-n-paste' line between the pigeon and the pelican. Don't you all see it? Geez, it's as clear as a god-damned Muslim in Salt Lake City (Utah). Later....
