No need - I have a fair idea what probably went wrong:
When you browse a writable disk on a Mac, it writes special HIDDEN
system files to every folder, which is probably confusing the hell out
of the camera when the card is put back in it.
Mike: Your best bet is to:
(1) plug the card into a Windows or Linux machine,
(2) Open it with file browser, such as Explorer or equivalen,
(3) Make sure the file browser is set to show 'hidden' & 'system'
files,
(4) Then search for & delete any files with 'AppleDouble' in their
names.

I didn't get that she was viewing them again on-camera.
If that is the case, then you are likely right...
It sounded to me like she went back to look...on her computer screen...but
again, the post was rather confusing...so who knows??

That's what I got, too, but reading it again, it could have been in
the camera.
Do Macs really do that? If they do, why would they do that during a
read?

Maybe not.

Nope. That is not true of Mac OS X and shouldn't have any effect
even if it was true.
