I contacted this group about a month ago asking for advice on buying a
digital camera. Well, after a bit of research using dpreview almost
exclusively I think I have narrowed it down to two cameras. I am
considering either the Canon Powershot Pro 1 or the Olympus C-8080 Wide
Zoom. (The latter is apparently discontinued by Olympus as it is no
longer listed on their web site, but some are still available from
retailers)

I am having a tough time deciding beween the two since it appears the
C-8080 has the better lens and takes better pictures overall whereas,
in my opinion the Pro1 has a better menu system and LCD design, so I
think it would be easier to use.

Any opinions on which camera is better?

If you can net either for $500 or under, they are good choices, the
Canon has a longer zoom reach.  For ultimate image quality, no one
has bested the Olympus lens except perhaps Sony with the R1.
However, if you can spend a bit more, a DSLR like Nikon's D50
is a better choice, or Olympus's E-500.
I have the C8080 and generally use the EVF instead of the LCD except
when I need to point the camera in a way that makes using the EVF
difficult.  However, the Olympus LCD is very good in bright
conditions, much better than some others.
Also, if you can find one, consider Nikon's 8080.
Build quality?  No question, you have to step up to a Canon 20D DSLR
to equal the Olympus.
