I would like to get an inexpensive camera to use for posting items for
eBay auctions. I'm completely new to both eBay and to digital
photography so any help will be sincerely appreciated..

I used to do a little hobby photog with my Minotolta XE-1 but that was
about 16-18 years ago. A couple days ago I took a test roll that I had
Walmart put on a CD as JPG's. Only half of a 24 exposure roll turned
out and most of those were terrible. II'm thinking that a digicam will
allow me to quickly sort out the crappy pics and re-do them.

I understand that the type of batteries and memory devices are
important considerations when buying a digital camera.. Are there any
inexpensive camera's that allow a bit of control over the exposure
settings or are the cheapies completely automated?

Thanks for any light you can shed for me on this subject.

Take a look at the following link:

There should be several choices there that will meet your needs.

Checkout the Fuji film A330. It is a 3 megapixel model. It has been
discontinued, but it is still available at some retailers at a great price
($120-130 US). It delivers sharp images - even better than some 4MP models I
compared it to. Exposure is accurate and the lens is good. My only complaint
is low light focusing, but this is an issue for numerous compacts.

Avoid the "no name" brands that claim to output 2mp - 6mp. They cost under
$100 to a bit over. The image quality is poor and they usually don't have an
optical zoom.

Depending on the items you are going to offer on auction, if you don't
anticipate becoming a camera hobbyist you won't need much in the way
of camera power. Someone will suggest there are just-past-current
cameras in the 3-5 MP range for not much money. Find one that has a
reasonable "macro" or close-up facility, and practice, practice,
practice.

Good photos do make a difference on eBay, but they are not the only
things. Go to
alt.marketing.online.ebay
where, in addition to the usual static, there is a lot of good
knowledge and helpful people. They'll be pleased to point you in the
direction of good equipment and successful practices.

I used to use a Sony Mavica for eBay shots.  You only need 640x480
resolution, and the Mavica stored photos on a floppy so you can not only
examine the photos on the large LCD, but just pop the floppy into your
computer to transfer the photos.  It also does a good job in low light, has
good auto white balance, and very close macro.

You can probably find one on eBay cheap as they don't make them anymore.

Look for something on the order of a Kodak DX7330.  Many other choices
in that general range.  You will get good pictures for eBay, and for
general use.

When I started out on Ebay several years ago, I used a little Nikon 2.0
megapixel Coolpix 2500.  I still use it on occasion as it is perfectly fine
for those close ups and I love the way the lens swivels.
I bought one for a friend recently on Ebay for less than $100.00.

Smiles,
Rosanne
