We travel for 2 months each summer and often dry camp with no electrical
hookups. I need a good charger that will work on my trucks 12v cigarette
plug . So I can charge up the AA Nickel metal hydride batteries that I use
in my Sony dsc-W! cybershot. Do you have any recommendations or models to
avoid? Thanks.

I tend to just use a 110v inverter, that way I can charge anything.

But the answer is Maha MH-C401FS.
Avoid using a 110V inverter. It isn't necessary, and it complicates
things.

I use both, depends on what I need to power.
I use a Power Tech Plus MB-3537, charges NiMh in about an hour and does up
to 4 cells on separate charge circuits.

An inverter can save purchasing, and carrying, several different 12v
chargers. That simplifies things. For a single device, you are correct.

I have a 300Watt inverter in the car as well, for some things there simply
is not any 12V chargers and this way I can get by without.

It may not be necessary, but it sure is handy to recharge your cell
phone, computer and anything else that uses 110 VAC to power it.

Yes.. Not only that, but they will recharge just about
every battery and device you currently own or will own
in the future..
I couldn't imagine buying a dedicated 12V charger for
everything I own. (Camera batteries, PDA, Cell Phone,
GPS and Laptop computer).

I have never used a 12V NiMH AA charger but of all the mains supply chargers
I have ever had, Vanson Speedy Box is my favourite. A thoroughly reliable
workhorse. Highly recommended. I suggest you contact Vanson by e-mail or
phone to see if they make one or similar one powered by the car cigarette
lighter.

On the Product list, the 3 pages of numerous Ni-Cd and Ni-MH Battery
Chargers in the catalogue only provide the model pictures and numbers. You

I use a powerport 12 which runs off either a lighter plug or a wall wart.
It can charge two 4 packs of AA or AAA plus four AAA thru C (maybe D) for a
total of 12 batteries at a time.
do I need this? Heck YES. we use for our model rocket club the following....
cobra FRS radios (5 of them with 3 AA bateries)
my film camera just recieved a high speed autowinder (4 AA) and I have two
flashes for it (2 AA + 2 AA)
portable radio scanner for tracking rocket locators and monitoring aircraft
to avoid (4AA)
last year we built a RC lander/rover unit with 2 recievers (4 AA + 4 AA) and
two transmitters (8 AA +8 AA)
and I know I am missing *something* but that still come to over 50 AA
bateries. admittedly I do not have 50 AA batteries, as we usually grab
batteries from one thing to run another, but I am trying to get that
eliminated, thank goodness for ebay.....
I wont even get into the setup we have for launch controllers, as that is a
12 volt setup and we are building gear for that voltage standard as well
(camcorders, launch controllers, PA, FRS base radio, etc.)

I have lots of chargers, four in line, but I have not been able to get one
that does eight "AAs" at a time.
I thank you:

I'm late to this thread, but if you're looking for a "AA" cell charger this
might be what you want:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50511&item=7504344444&rd=
1&ssPageName=WDVW
It's a 10 position 10 channel charger, that means it deals with the charge state
of each battery, most chargers operate on 2 batteries at a time, so you'd have
to have your batteries in at least pairs to get them to charge properly.
Also: this charger uses a standard 12VDC wall wart for all you need is a cigg
lighter adapter to use if in your car. It also have a proper discharge circuit
if you want to start your batteries from zero.
Also look at this seller's other auction for good prices on Ni-MH cells.
He also has an off-eBay store but the prices are a couple dollars more there.
If that's not what you're looking for, maybe this is:

If you can still find it anywhere, Rayovac's PS4 is an excellent
charger. The package calls it their "1-Hour NiMH Charger", but
newer, higher capacity NiMH batteries will take a little longer if
charged from empty to full. It charges up to four AA or AAA cells
independently, both NiMH and NiCad. Each cell has its own LED to
indicate whether it's being charged or has finished. A fifth LED is
used for 9 volt batteries. With many other chargers, slight
vibration can dislodge a battery enough so that it stops charging.
The PS4 holds each cell very firmly, so that would never be a
problem, even in a bouncing truck. The PS4 is sold in different
configurations. The one identified as PS4KIT includes a zippered
nylon travel case, a 12v DC cigarette plug adapter and two NiMH AA
batteries. I've seen them sold in a bargain outlets, K-Mart and
CompUSA. You might also be able to order it directly from Rayovac.
