I'm starting to look a good quality flat bed scanner. I'll not be
scanning film but many old photos and documents for cleaning up in
Photoshop and creating printer profiles.
Oh, it'll be on an iMac...

Scanner technology is so well developed that almost any major brand of
scanner (Epson, Canon, H-P), will fill your needs perfectly. And they
are cheap.

If you want a personal rec. then I can thoroughly recommend the Epson 3170
Photo.
It is utterly brilliant.
It may be over the top though, since it also scans negs and slides from 35mm
up to 6x7

A really brilliant shareware scanning app is VueScan for the Mac
http://www.hamrick.com/ . It supports only select scanners, but this includes
virtually all Epson models, I think.
