Anyone looking at the Olympus forum on dpreview will probably know I
bought one last week in a moment of weakness. I promised I'd wait for a
full review rather than play the 'early adopter lottery'.

Bottom line is that it takes perfectly acceptable pictures and has a
good quality EVF and (especially LCD). Focus speed isn't very good, but
that's nothing new on this kind of camera. Movie mode quality is fine
but the audio's poor quality, sadly (for those of us who care).

I recommend waiting for more thorough reviews before buying.

I should perhaps at least *try* to be a bit more enthusiastic. :-) The
super macro mode, focusing down to 1cm, is very good indeed.

Isn't this a plague of this particular model? Many people are interested and
many want to buy it, but for some reason they won't admit openly they are so
interested.

It's predecessor, the C-2100 UZ (which I happen to own), was also plagued by
poor audio quality in movie mode. It's a shame Oly haven't been able to
improve this on the new model.

Thanks for your info anyway. I appreciate it, but I'm afraid nothing can
stop me from buying this camera. Call me crazy, but I'm even contemplating
selling the whole of my old OM equipment to get the money. Worse is, I have
even recommended the camera to a good friend of mine, so time will tell if
he's still my friend in a couple of months. :-))

I'm sure you'll both be happy with the camera. I'm spoiled by having a
Canon S1 with great movie mode, and a K100D with great.. well, DSLR
mode! :-) The 550 was supposed to update the S1 in all respects, and it
has done *except* in movie mode. (The 550 is also a little larger and
doesn't fit in a coat pocket easily).

Sadly movie mode is fairly important to me, and that's probably making
me less enthusiastic about the 550 than I should be. The 28mm wide end
is another excellent feature which should ensure this camera sells to a
lot of people.

What was the issue with the movie mode when using an Olympus xD memory card
versus using for instance a Fujifilm High Speed xD card?

Type H is supposed to be faster than type M, and therefore ought to be
more suited to recording longer movie clips. Olympus don't seem to do a
2Gb type H, so I bought a Fuji.

The only extra thing the Olympus cards allow you to do is use the
onboard 'panorama' feature. It's a relatively minor annoyance.

Thanks for the info! I haven't seen an 1 GB Oly type H card for that matter
either.

BTW, there's one demo SP-550 now on auction here in Sweden with an opening
bid of 3600 SKR (about 500 USD), and that's with a 1 GB memory card. This
package usually cost about 4500 SKR or more (from 635 USD and upwards).
Guess it's now or never... :)
