You mean the FZ30? You have enough telephoto with the FZ30 that you
shouldn't need anything additional.

Damn. Yes - I do of course mean the FZ30.

And it may not really be because I need more telephoto but that doesn't
stop me from wondering.

Kind regards

There are tests of various tele-converters on the FZ30 at this page:

If you are really concerned about the range of various telephotos longer
than the maximum the FZ30 provides you should consider either a Nikon
D50 or a Canon DRXT.  With either of these you could match the focal
length you want and have all of the additional features a DSLR offers.

.. together with all the disadvantages.  Cost, size, weight, dust problems
etc.  Two different solutions - each with its own advantages and
disadvantages.  Which is best depends on what you are trying achieve and
how deep your pocket is.

I wonder just I serious and frequent the dust problem are with a DSLR
and if they can be mitigated easily.

If you rarely change your lens you wouldn't have a problem. For example, if
you had the Nikon 18-200 VR lens you most likely wouldn't be changing it
too often.

I have one, mostly because it was locally available. Yes, it's good.
It's nice to not have to use an adaptor ring, but it is a fairly large
heavy chunk out there on the end of the already long lens. You will need
a tripod--the ois isn't magic.

Have a look at the web site mentioned and decide for yourself (I
sometimes don't agree with the author's judgements of his photos, but
maybe it's just the web conversion). The usual problems with add-on
telelenses are blurred edges and more chromatic aberration. The LT-55 is
pretty good in this regard. The longer lenses get, the more the contrast
softens, so don't expect extreme telephoto shots to be as crisp as wide
angle.
