| Yes, I'm aware of it -- and of the patch that it installs. It was put on
| the older system when I bought my D70 3 years ago and when I set up the new
| one last month -- on the same network -- I thought I had copied all of the
| installed patches from the older one. Apparently I hadn't.

Based on a suggestion in response to a similar question I asked in a Windows
XP newsgroup, the solution was not the NEF viewer patch which worked on my
D70 images but predates the D300 and can't handle those.
The problem was the file association for the NEF files. On the computer
without a problem the association was to the Microsoft RAW viewer which was
smart enough to recognize that it couldn't handle D300 raw files and doesn't
try. On the computer with a problem, the association was with CaptureNX and
there may be an incompatibility there instead.
The problem is "fixed" by choosing a viewer for the NEF files that doesn't
try to create a thumbnail! I can view them with ViewNX or CaptureNX
whenever I want and since I always shoot RAW + JPG whenever I shoot RAW, I
can at least see what the image looks like.

Or you might install the updated Nikon raw codec which supports the D300,
as long as you are not running a 64 bit version of Windoze.

The final solution was that I apparently had a bad installation of
CaptureNX. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it's working perfectly and
even supplying thumbnails for viewing NEF files in Windows Explorer.
NOW ... a question: I installed CaptureNX version 1.3.0 which is what I
also had running flawlessly on a Win2K system. I have the 1.3.3 upgrade but
haven't installed it yet because -- at least as of now -- I don't see any
reason to do that. BUT ... has anyone either had bad experiences with 1.3.3
or know what the upgrade was intended to solve?
TIA

If I don't have any of the (apparent) problems that are specifically listed,
is there any good reason to apply the upgrade?

You answered your own question, no?
