Anybody else having problem with Thumbnails from D300 in WinXP?

Computer is a new Dell Precision 3400 with dual core Pentium and 2 GB RAM.
OS is manufacturer's load of XP with SP2 and all of the latest updates since
delivery last month.

Camera is a Nikon D300 shooting in 14-bit Raw plus JPG.  Sometimes -- and
only in some folders -- Windows Explorer barfs when asked to display
thumbnails.  If it fails in a folder, it will fail everytime in that folder
so there's obviously something about the pictures in that folder that kills
it.  BUT ... when I view the same folders from another (but older) WinXP
over the network with thumbnails, there's no problem and the images of the
JPG in the folder are displayed properly.

What possible incompatibility could exist between a folder of digital
pictures, about half .NEF and the other half .JPG and one WinXP computer but
not another?

Yes, I'm aware of it -- and of the patch that it installs.  It was put on
the older system when I bought my D70 3 years ago and when I set up the new
one last month -- on the same network -- I thought I had copied all of the
installed patches from the older one.  Apparently I hadn't.
   Thanks

Based on a suggestion in response to a similar question I asked in a Windows
XP newsgroup, the solution was not the NEF viewer patch which worked on my
D70 images but predates the D300 and can't handle those.

The problem was the file association for the NEF files.  On the computer
without a problem the association was to the Microsoft RAW viewer which was
smart enough to recognize that it couldn't handle D300 raw files and doesn't
try.  On the computer with a problem, the association was with CaptureNX and
there may be an incompatibility there instead.

The problem is "fixed" by choosing a viewer for the NEF files that doesn't
try to create a thumbnail!  I can view them with ViewNX or CaptureNX
whenever I want and since I always shoot RAW + JPG whenever I shoot RAW, I
can at least see what the image looks like.

Or you might install the updated Nikon raw codec which supports the D300,
as long as you are not running a 64 bit version of Windoze.

The final solution was that I apparently had a bad installation of
CaptureNX.  I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it's working perfectly and
even supplying thumbnails for viewing NEF files in Windows Explorer.

NOW ... a question:  I installed CaptureNX version 1.3.0 which is what I
also had running flawlessly on a Win2K system.  I have the 1.3.3 upgrade but
haven't installed it yet because -- at least as of now -- I don't see any
reason to do that.  BUT ... has anyone either had bad experiences with 1.3.3
or know what the upgrade was intended to solve?

If I don't have any of the (apparent) problems that are specifically listed,
is there any good reason to apply the upgrade?

You answered your own question, no?

What do you mean, "barfs?" Refuses to display images? Crashes? Blue
screen of death?

Can you move the images to another folder and have them display
properly in that folder?

If you set folder options to display hidden & system files AND
EXTENSIONS! there is a thumbs.db file or something like that which you
can try deleting so it can rebuild... or move the files to another
folder & delete that folder.
