Just got anew 40D and it's great. Fantastic color, sharpness, etc. But the
software is not so great. After I installed it, it keeps crashing with
folders that have any CRW file in it. Anybody have an idea?
Thanks.

CRW or CR2?
Anyway, get the latest versions of the Canon software from teh Canon CDs or
from:
http://software.canon-europe.com/
Good luck!

XP, Vista, Mac OS, etc.  More information would help us help you.

Card reader?  And so on.

CR2 files of course..

XP SP2
Intel Core2duo 2.4
2 GB ram
etc.

All other programs work fine from the CD except this one. Tried 3 versions
so far, all the same result. It might have something to do with HP
all-in-one software, because the first installation it was "looking" for a
file in the windows\...HP dir. After de-installing all the HP stuff, I
re-installed it, but maybe I need a "deeper" uninstall?

Damn!  You're regressing with that choice.  Don't know if the 40D is any
lighter than the D300, but I still think you are going to have more pain
than you bargained for with this choice.  If you want to get the most out of
the 40D you are going to need CS3, seriously.  Talk to the good ol boy in
Tennessee as he can help you with a "fixed version and a keygen" that will
get you up to speed for free.

Not even the great white dope from Chattanooga can save the day for him
Rita. Once you sink into the depths of criminality and resort to using
stolen property you are marked for life. Corrupted beyond redemption.

Better to take the oath and trade the beast on a D300. Take you loss
with the knowledge of really, really good images. Shoot 100% JPEG and
spend your time enjoying photography, not Photoshopography.

Besides... The fresh air just has to be better than the stale farts
coming out of the white dope's mouth and socks!

I had a similar problem.... I found that i had some files in the
directory that DPP didn't like...  I can't remember if they were
Photoshop files or edited JPG files... but DPP didn't like them... as
soon as I moved them to another directory DPP worked fine...

The latest version (but only the latest version) of DPP has that problem with
JPG images taken on a Powershot S50 (two different cameras). Canon was
moderately sympathetic but seemed disinclined to do anything substantive to
fix it. Apparently they think anyone with legacy JPG's should be using the
gruesome (IMO) Zoombrowser instead of DPP. If you or the OP would like to help
take on Canon, feel free to mention my name. If you need the case number for
reference, I'll try to dig it out.

What's so infuriating is that I've used several earlier versions of DPP, and
none of them had the bug. I could revert, but the latest version has some nice
features that I wouldn't want to do without.

So far, the problem seems to be limited to the S50. I have a fair number of
JPG's taken with a G-5, an S70, and two different XTi's, and I don't think any
of them ever provoked the crash. But both my wife and my daughter used to use
S50's, so it's more than a minor annoyance.

Zoombrowser, the clumsy substitute provided by Canon for use with non-EOS
cameras, is itself not bug-free. A few releases ago, it stopped being able to
communicate with a camera from a computer running Windows Server 2003. I
worked around that by getting a card reader, but the onset of the problem
didn't exactly increase my confidence in Canon's software developers.
