Concerns about 40D 1st generation

As with any 1st generation product it is not unusual to find problems.
Even adding 1st generation new features to a mature product frequently
generates problems.

In reading some of the early releases, I haven't seen anything that
talks about how much, and what kind of testing has been done to the
40D.

Often times companies are in such a rush to get a product to market
they don't do as thorough a job in testing instead relying on the
customer.

What is the likelyhood that Canons soon to be released 40D will have
some inherent problems, and if so what can we as new owners expect
from Canon?

So far I like what I have read but I don't want to spend this kind of
money to be a test bed for canon, I don't need the hassle.

Any thoughts?

Jump brands and avoid it? Given the issues with the release of the
20D (banding, lots of errors) your fears could be correct, but I don't
think so. Really, how much different is the 40D from the 20D?
Now Nikon with their new focus system, etc, is more of a question.

My Rebel XT has worked flawlessly since buying it a year and a half
ago, but two brand new Canon lenses (out of 3) have had problems that
required sending them in for service.

That is a pretty bad ratio, so I have to agree with your concerns.

I will wait until late winter or spring before (maybe) buying the 40D.
Initial reports will be in then, and prices will probably have
dropped.

While two duds out of three is not good, so far my experience with
Canon service has been excellent. My 70-300 came back promptly with
all new glass. The other one was the 2.8/17-55mm, which had autofocus
problems. It is still out---I'm expecting its return in a week.

Almost a certainty.

Chronic and severe focusing problems, if previous models are a guide.

Wait for a year. By then, Canon will have sorted the problems.

Or buy a Nikon instead. Nikon products seem to have a far higher
chance of working better straight out of the box, even when newly
introduced.

Which was it, the D80 or the D200 that had all of the banding concerns
after release?

I wouldn't say that one or the other has a significantly better record
on DSLRs. Most cameras released by both companies are fine, and every
few models each company makes a mistake. Both have a good record of
addressing the issues.

To the OP, I'd agree that you should wait until the camera has been on
the market for three months and see what shows up.

Hi!
One thing that might be of concern is the new Digic III.
Another thing is the focussing with the LCD, which by the way is not the
best approach. I remember the Canon Pro 1 which allowed me to take photos
through the eyepiece. I used that approach only, because generally, the LCD
is useless in the sun.
Then, of course is the "automatic" sensor cleaner... I prefer cleaning my
30D sensor myself rather than having the camera doing a half **** job of it.
Beside, the mechanism of automatic cleaning must be sensitive, rendering
cleaning with Eclipse and swab a more dangerous process. My 2 cents.

Nah, it was just a typo that the spell checker didn't catch. If
repeated often enough it could become the accepted spelling.

So wait a few months and read the user forums to find out what problems the
beta testers are encountering ;-)
