I really love my new Pentax *ist DS that came with the 18-55 kit lens.
Because of the 1.5x factor, this lens give me a 35mm equivalent of 28-80 I
think. I was wondering if I can use this lens in my Pentax ZX-M manual SLR
system for films. That will save me from buying that 18-35 wide zoom I
always wanted to have. Has anybody actually tried it? Do I need to be
careful about anything particular? Thanks a lot in advance.

I haven't tried, but I think that since the kit lens it designed for
the smaller image circle of the *ist, it will give you vignetting if
put on a film camera.

Yes, thats what I was afraid of. I tried and it does show vignetting in
anything wider than 24mm. Oh well, I might just start investing in non DA
lenses for future compatibility.

I'd think that the lack of an aperture ring would create a problem with
a manual camera even if the smaller image design didn't.

It will physically go on the film cameras, of course, as it's the same
lens mount, but it would certainly vignette as it's only designed to
cover the APS-sized CCD and not a full frame 35mm piece of film.
I haven't actually wasted any film trying it, but due to the lack of an
aperture ring, it *might* work in program and shutter priority modes,
but it certainly couldn't work in aperture priority and manual modes.
If you're continuing with film photography, I think you need to buy that
18-35 zoom.
Since getting my *ist DS, the only film I've shot has been on a 35mm
compact which fits in my handbag and is therefore available for those
occasions when I'm not planning any photography but something turns up.
I'm intending to continue to shoot slides, but I haven't actually done
so. I'm also intending to shoot a bit of b&w and infrared, and maybe use
up my stock of colour negative film with a foray into cross-processing,
but I believe the *ist DS will replace the need for shooting colour
negative on film - except maybe for super wide angle stuff. (I've got an
18-28.)
I'm just saying that you should think carefully about how much film
photography you are likely to do before you decide that you need the
18-35.

Well, I just put the 18-55 from my *istDS onto my 35mm auto-focus auto-exp
MZ-50.
Through the viewfinder, vignetting is obvious (enough to be a real problem)
at 18mm.
At approx 28mm f.l. it disappears off the focussing screen.
At 50mm f.l. there is no sign of it on the screen.
Of course, the results on film would be around 10% *more* vignetted.
Better get a 35mm-capable lens. Heck - they're cheap enough now.
