Nikon 18-135mm AF-S DX Lens Question

I am considering buying a Nikon D40x with the the 18-135 AF-S DX Lens.
My local store only has the 18-55mm lens, so I have not seen the longer
lens.

My question...

Does the lens get longer when zooming, or is the 3.4 inches the total
length at all zoom ranges.

Maybe a stupid question, but I am fairly new to this stuff.

At full zoom it extends to just under 15cm.

    Which, if you want it in the same units you asked your question
in, is about 5.9". :-)
