i bought one used because my friend can use my SMC lenses on his 30D, but I
can't seem to get thet same results with the 20D. I have an adapter (non
focus confirming) an attach my lesn, but when shooting in manual, after the
meter says the exposure would be good, i shoot and get an error message. it
says error 1, which says that the lens and body are having communication
errors.

what setting, if any, do i need to change in the menus, so that this will
work properly?

thanks

There should be no communication at all between body and lens. So if there
are any contacts, tape them off.
Try it, putting youre body in Av mode. The display should read 'Aperture 0'.
Then try to take a picture.
It works that way on my 20D with a Peleng fisheye.
On the Peleng I have to close the aperture by hand (it has a 'lock' ring).
If thats not possible on youre SMC, you can only use it wide open.
