Last week I found out that the local paper (part of a huge media chain) is
switching from Nikon to Canon.

And today, at the local Easter Parade, most of the Dslr toting yuppies had
Nikon gear.

Must be a deeper meaning there somewhere.

A lot of newspaper people prefer Canon's for sport and what I've seen
here is many papers move over completely to Canon so that they have one
lot of gear that can be shared across the photogs, whether they mainly
shoot sport or more general.

For everyone else, Nikon and Canon are both great and offer many great
lenses. I really do think it is personal preference issue only, unless
you already have a lot of money sunk into lenses. In the real amateur
photog area of occasional weekend shooters, the Nikon name has a lot of
traction for historical reasons.

Cheers,

Wayne

what I want to know is if they are changing over to the 'Dark side' how
do I get some of the cast off equipment?

Dark Side, considering that all of the cameras are black what is the
dark side?-)

In order to buy Nikon stock you have to know who the parent company of Nikon
really is.
This is not so straightforward as you might think . . .

It was straightforward for me; a simple Google search did it.

THIS IS A SIG LINE; NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!
The White House gave John Kerry's
campaign nemesis Sam Fox, who funded
the Swift Boat Veterans, a recess
appointment to Belgium on Wednesday.
Nothing ever changes. John Kerry
insisted he was for the appointment
before he was against the appointment.

It's Nikon Corp., as listed on the stock exchange.

What was your point?

For newsprint quality reproduction, they won't likely suffer much.

When "huge media chains" switch to Canon...the one "suffering" the
loss...will be Nikon.
-But nobody really expected you to get the point, Rich.

Depends on how many photogs are on their staff.  If less than 100, who
cares?

Watch the attributions, dope.

Search Mitsubishi's postings: some list Nikon as a subsidiary. This is only
one reason why the actual ownership of Nikon is not necessarily what Nikon
posts on their website.

Q1:      Is Mitsubishi a single company?
A1:     No. "Mitsubishi" is a community that consists of a multitude of
independent companies. The names of most - but not all - of those
companies contain the word "Mitsubishi." And many of the companies
use the three-diamond Mitsubishi mark. But none calls itself simply
       "Mitsubishi."

So the term subsidiary is not quite correct.

Q4:      Do the Mitsubishi companies have some kind of decision-making body
that determines overall policy for the companies?
A4:     No. But all the companies honor the Three Principles prescribed by
Koyata Iwasaki, the Fourth and final president of the old Mitsubishi
organization: 1. Corporate Social Responsibility, 2. Integrity and
Fairness, and 3. International Understanding through Trade.

See http://www.mitsubishi.com/e/group/about.html for more.
See http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/portfolio/ir/stock_info/status.htm
for actual Nikon stock ownership.

Seems much like a RichA post, but I am not sure because RichA has been
blocked here for a while now.  Does anyone know?  I might plonk John Smith
on general principles, in any case.

| Last week I found out that the local paper (part of a huge media chain) is
| switching from Nikon to Canon.

The release of 5D and the announcement of 1DMkIII changed a lot of thing in the
photographic market. There's switching of pro's from Nikon to Canon of avalanche
proportions going on right now.

| And today, at the local Easter Parade, most of the Dslr toting yuppies had
| Nikon gear.

Most likely these were secondary market buyers. Because of the above used market
is currently oversaturated with discarded Nikon bodies and lenses in mint condition.

Sounds like cult ranting to me. Show some evidence (real data) for
your suppositions.
