I'm trying to get a Wein safe sync to fire monolights on a Canon Rebel XT.
My flash meter fires them with the same cord. Do I need to set something
different? Thank blah

Same setup. Don't need the safe sync.

Ignore my other reply.
Did you mean that with the safe sync your flash is not firing?
Did you measure the voltage of the sync from the flash? If it's low (5V
or so) then you do not need the safe sync.
The Rebel 20D can take 250V, either polarity. What does the Rebel XT
manual say?

The safe sync has a test button, helpfully labeled 'Test Button.' Hook
your lights to it and press the test button. If the strobes fire, then
you know it's between the camera and the safe sync.

I found my issue was with the strobe/monolight and not the Safe sync.
