After getting the 20D, I took the advice from some folks here at r.p.d.s-s
and decided that I'd go wide first so I got the EF-S 10-22 and I like it.
So, thank you to those who chimed in.
I just spent this past weekend in very close proximity to Nellis AFB and was
really frustrated that I didn't yet have any EF glass with "reach." (In
hindsight, I should have bought some film, dragged out the T90 and the 300
f/4 + 1.4x TC...)
So, today I went trolling at my local camera store and found (IMO) a very
good deal on a Canon EF 28-200 f/3.5-5.6 USM.
It may be used, but you'd never know it. It's clean as a whistle and works
great!! I think I've found my "everyday" lens.
Nice balance. Not too heavy. Good contrast. Good focal length range and
with the 20D's 1.6x crop, it has some "reach." And, it focuses fast in even
moderate light.
Can't wait to go out and shoot some candids where I can finally get some
separation between my subject and the background. And now I can go do some
"bird watching" (the aluminum kind...) too.
I really like this lens!!

There's someone in rec.photo.digital inquiring about this lens. You
might want to share your thoughts with them.
I'd be interested to know how well the lens does - it has a lot of
features (IS, USM) and a huge range. If it performs decently optically,
it might warrant adding it to the collection at some point.
