D70 setup for sunset photos... how do I?

What's the best way to setup a D70 for sunset photos, or is it just a matter
of experimenting?  My old Sony had a sunset mode on it that worked every
time, exposing the sunset perfectly and letting the landscape just fall away
and go dark.

Thanks.

Have you considered simply bracketing your exposures and noting which combo
of f-stop and shutter works best?

Also, make sure that you're not using auto white balance, which will suck
the life right out of a sunset. Use daylight white balance.

Thanks.  Didn't think about that one.

I didn't either until I trashed a couple of once-in-a-lifetime sunset shots
on the Firehole River in Yellowstone. Deep, deep, oranges turned to a sort
of dirty lemon color.

Shoot RAW. White balance can be chosen/corrected at import time.

At least for the once-in-a-lifetime shots.

I will respectfully disagree with this assessment for Nikon cameras, even
the "lowly" P&S ones based upon my experience.
For example:

Now, if you are using the on camera flash, you are better off if you
explicitly set the WB to Speedlight.

Very cool shots. :-)  Are you saying that you left the white balance set to
automatic for these shots?  I realize I can shoot RAW and make the decision
later, but I tend to shoot a lot in jpeg mode.

Yes, if you note the full path, the first two were taken with a "lowly" P&S
CP-990 which doesn't have a native raw mode. The D70 while taken in raw was
processed with the as shot auto WB. So if shot in jpg would be the same.

Start with A-mode, ~-2EV?

Well, with the digital camera, just keep trying until you see a good
exposure.  (Use the histogram chart to see if the expore is really
good.)  Start with "sunny 16" (a sunny scene gets properly exposed at
f/16 and a shutter speed roughly equal to the ISO), and work your way
down.

Or just put the camera on automatic and bracked widely.

More fun to bracket wildly, whilst making quiet 'weeee!' sounds.

Shoot daylight WB,  auto could destroy the warm colors of the lighting.
