This makes sense, since the AF detectors are in the reflected path,
not on the sensor passing on the "live preview" stuff. I recall that
the Canon 20Da pioneered this "live preview" stuff for frank
necessity. It may well be that, despite the lack of AF and such, the
usefulness was noticed by others. Or maybe the solution was carried
along because it had little extra cost.

And people who need to precisely focus on the sky. If Canon had a
model with the IR filter removed, it would probably sell well to the
astrophotographers. But since there are about only 10 of them in the
entire world, and they already have more expensive, larger frame,
unfiltered, 16b, cooled cameras, well ...
