Canon 20D advice

My 20D shutter button has begun to need increasing amounts of pressure to
release the shutter.
The shutter button on the grip remains fine as does shutter release on the
remote release, it would appear that only the button on the camera is
getting a bit tired!
I've had the camera just over two years and must have taken a few tens of
thousands of pictures.
I have just spoken to a Canon repair centre (in UK) who want 100gbp, plus
tax to "have a look".  Prior to packing it up and sending it off I though it
may be an idea to see if anyone on this group had experienced a similar
problem and did they solve it for a few pence......?
Should I just squirt the button with a drop of WD40, or not? (Not entirely
serious!!!!)
And, no, I'm not tempted to "upgrade" to the next big thing as I'm quite
happy with it.
Thanks for any help
Cheers

Is it physical or electrical?  Does it feel the same; the same amount of
pressure to produce the same mechanical travel?

My guess is that it is electrical and I doubt contact cleaner (or WD40)
would help.

No, it "feels" mechanical, it requires more pressure although I can't decide
if the button "travel" has changed.  I presume it must travel further if I'm
applying more pressure but it doesn't feel as though it is.  I note, today
that it is less consistent than yesterday which is most unwelcome!  A couple
of times today I "missed" the shot (probably the best pictures I'd ever have
taken...!) when it didn't fire at all.  The next few shots I took in
portrait mode using the grip button and when I resorted to normal it fired
with simply a noticeable amount more pressure than is usual.
Thanks for your reply.

Well, if it is gummed up, a dose of WD40 might be a prudent experiment.
Spray the WD40 (or silicone lubricant) into the cap that comes with the
pressurized can and then dip a toothpick into the liquid and sparingly
transfer it to the shutter button.  Try a little and first and add more
later if it seems to help.

I'd try it, given your situation.
