maya - 17 Feb 2007 20:03 GMT Hi, I'm in India, I need to transfer photos to a portable HD to take home.. I installed sw that comes w/camera, tranferred photos from camera to computer, but can't find how to transfer photos from cmoputer to portable HD...
when transfering photos would like to just put in a folder in computer, then from folder in computer transfer them to portable HD.. for now, until I get home, I don't need to edit, orgranize, etc.. photos in any way..I just want to transfer them to the portable HD..
sw it doesn't even ask, when you're tranfering from camera to computer, in what folder you want to put them.. why is this so complicated.. I would like to just transfer them to a folder in computer and from there to my portable HD that I brought along on this trip especially for this purpose..
would appreciate a prompt response since need to do this like yesterday (don't dare delete photos from memory card until have them safely in portable HD.. a memory card of 2 GB costs as much as a portable HD of 80 GB -- yikes...)
thank you very much...

You do not need special software to do this. Select the folders you want to copy, and paste them into the HDD where you wish to store these folders. Done.
There is a way of skipping the computer completely, direct from camera to portable HDD. Do a search for PHR=250 OTG . This item does not include a HDD.

Some of the drives say they are formated but in the 3 I have had they have never been dependable until the drive was in a Windows (or Mac) format. You should then be able to transfer the photos.

Just drag from the memory card to the USB hard drive.
Don't connect USB to the camera, remove the memory card, get a card reader & plug it into the computer.

[quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > > - Show quoted text - thank you all for yr responses.. yes, realized last night after posting this that don't need sw.. (what threw me off is that it says in manual you HAVE TO install sw before connecting camera to computer.. I now suspect this is not the case.. ) just as you say, found my way to portable HD (which was already formatted (since accepted photos w/no problems.. I hadn't even thought of that.. however, it did NOT come w/a USB cable -- retarded -- thank god cable for camera was good for HD too..) so will uninstall sw and go from there, will just copy photos from camera to computer then to HD.... my question now is, is it possible to protect photos in HD from being accidentally deleted (read-only protects them from being edited, not deleted..) also can HD go thru X-ray check in airport without losing content in it (that would be something, for me to get back to NY and find all my photos deleted..)
no need to buy a card reader since have borrowed laptop in my hotel room now (and soon after get home will purchase new computer w/built- in card reader..)
thank you all very much for yr help..

In circumstances like yours, abroad and worried about losing photos during journey, it is worth using an online (Internet) storage site. So long as you can gain access to the Internet you can copy your files to the site and recover them on your return.

Uploading a day's shooting over dialup will take more than a day.

thank you all again for yr help.. once post images will certainly post url here.. (will be a few weeks till I purchase new machine, have time...) my current mach no way can handle this amount of data.. so far VERY pleased with Nikon D80, made right decision.....:)
thank you very much..

Shooting RAW I suspect you'd need one of the online backup sites--here's an article that lists a few--check their pricing though, the pricing in the article is not current <http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,118454-page,1/article.html>. For short term ibackup might be good--they offer a monthly rate--but for long term they're all kind of ludicrous for the amount of storage they provide.

you are allowed 25gb free space. There is a limit on individual file size, which, if I recall correctly, is 10mb.

[quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > >km Just another point I think is important. Although you can upload 25Gb there is a monthly download limit of 1GB which is still a fair number of files. You can access them over a longer period of course at 1GB per month. The carrot of this free option is that you may want to make a payment (see site) to get a bigger download limit to recover the photos immediately on return home.
Streamload page will pass you on to Mediamax site automatically - there was a change sometime last year. No doubt there are plenty of alternatives - Google "free web storage". A couple of hours would give you plenty of time to open enough free ones to cover your eventual storage needs. as was mentioned by another poster, it goes without saying that Broadband speed is essential.

Gizmo. - 18 Feb 2007 12:14 GMT also can HD go thru X-ray check in airport without losing
> content in it (that would be something, for me to get back to NY and > find all my photos deleted..) The HDD will be fine going through x-ray. Take the HDD in your hand luggage though. The last thing you want is some knuckle dragging baggage handler chucking the bag containing your HDD around !
