I need to find some software that allows me to add metadata in the files I
create prior to uploading images as jpegs to a stock library.
I shoot on a Canon, and have Zoombrowser or Raw Shooter Premium available. I
don't use Photoshop
Is there an piece of software that will achieve this?

I'd normally recommend Aperture, but it appears as if you are Win based
from your headers, so...
If you're comfortable with a command line, you can use ExifTool.
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
Lightroom from Adobe will also allow some [limited] metadata to be
added, and can export directly to the jpegs.
Here's another place to look, you might find something there:

What is the limitation on metadata that Lightroom can add?

The limitation on lightroom is that it'll cease to function after a
certain date, and then you'll have to buy it for many hundreds of
dollars.

Is this somehow different from other beta software? It's $199 for a
while, then goes to $299.
What is your beef, if I may be presumptuous enough to ask?

About the only thing I could find that I could add was keywords. All
the EXIF that was originally with the photo was retained, of course,
but I never could find a way to add anything else other than keywords.
that may be changed in the release version.

Beta 4.1 allows you to make custom metadata templates, for one, so that
everything you want can be added on first import.

OK. I never upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1, so it may be something that
wasn't in it before. thanks for setting me straight.

I use IrfanView to do that--it's free and an important part of my
workflow in addition to photoshop. You have to make sure you install
the plugins package with it, and then when you open an image hitting
alt+ i and then another i and you're into the area that will allow you
to monkey with the IPTC info or to add a comment. www.irfanview.com

Use freeware with full editing of metadata:

That is a nice looking bit of software, but I will submit that it is
overly complicated for the intended useage. IrfanView, on the other
hand, handily replaces Window's native viewer, which is a piece of
crap, and by hitting the space bar to advance between images and then
alt + i + i + i (literally, hold down the alt and hit the i key three
times) one can easily and quickly access the IPTC content; further,
one can add comments (alt + i + i + c) and apply them to a whole set
of images. Finally, though xnview does allow some editing of exif, as
far as I can see you can only edit the time and date. I am biased in
so far that I feel every photographer (or anyone working with lots of
images) should have IrfanView on their windows system to facilitate
their image workflow.

What sort of metadata? Batching your name on or titles & annotation?

Am looking to add keywords in the metadata for use in a search engine on a
stock library as well as my name and shoot date

Thanks, I don't really have a specific recommendation but I think you
are looking at IPTC data, and make sure you can batch append by
selecting groups of thumbnails... and by digging into subfolders. I've
tinkered with a few and I can tell you Irfanview is a neat free program
but it won't add keywords to selected batches. It might be possible to
write a command like script but you want a point & click solution. I'm
sure there is something out there for around $40 with a free trial
version, just check these criteria. Also note that a lot of these
programs are poorly written and put some data into fields that aren't
formatted quite right so another program won't be able to read certain
fields. I've tinkered with several such utilities.
I would ask the stock agency exactly what they want and if they
recommend a program. If I may ask, what is the agency? I should be doing
something like this.
My solution has been my own custom php web based annotation & nested
folder system using tiny .txt files with names matching the jpegs, plus
the nested folder names give location and an index.txt for each folder
gives general info on the whole set. The next step is to improve the
search engine friendliness of the system.

The Stock Agency is called ByteStock and I have emailed them but had no
response, so have been trying to sort out under my own steam, as if I upload
without the data, they will charge me to add keywords

Ah, OK in the UK. I see their page isn't very helpful, I googled 'IPTC
Editor' & this one sounds familiar, like I tried a test version, it's $70
http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/help/iptc.htm
Scroll to the bottom & you'll see how batch editing can be done.

Mapivi (http://mapivi.de.vu) can add/edit/search all IPTC tags of one
picture or a selection of pictures.
It's free, open source and platform independent.

check thumbs plus, it allows a lot of data to be added.

Yes, I think that's another one worth checking out.

Yes, plenty of software.
IrfanView is good, & free:
<http://www.irfanview.net/>
Operation: Just hit the 'I' key while viewing the image you want to
annotate.
