Yes, it was a sight to see this morning during a news briefing at the
Pentagon.  Most of the PJs there were chimping like they just fell of a
truck carrying 20,000 pounds of bananas.  I'm not sure why this was
happening, but it was funny as hell and I shook my head in disbelief.  These
guys know better.  Is this a new trend?  Would immunizing your LCD with
black electrical tape cure chimping?  I did notice most chimpers were Canon
shooters.  For Christ's sake it's not like they are at the Superbowl.
There's no reason for all this chimping!

Agreed.

I have my LCD display set to retire 4 seconds after a shot.  Still, I rarely
look at it after taking a shot.  Why bother?  It's digital.  Take several and,
hopefully, one will be "the one", probably after not a little post-processing
on a ~21-inch computer display.  What are they hoping to see, anyway?

I have always LOVED the term, "chimping", though.  It's probably the most
accurate - and funny - description of a (sadly) widely-practiced photographic
activity.

Because it's a tool unavailable to film that allows a photographer to see
what he or she is getting immediately instead of waiting for the film to get
back.  Now, if lighting isn't changing, and they keep checking over and
over, that's unnecesary, but technically chimping is showing everybody the
lcd and going ooh, ooh, ooh, which isn't what you're talking about.

Those idiots who insist that looking at the lcd is always a stupid thing are
just that, f.cking idiots.  Really.  Morons.  You don't get digital at all.

Figured out yet how to see the histogram in the viewfinder?

A glance at the histogram is nothing to scoff at.
Histograms are perhaps the most powerful in-the-field tool for analysing
exposure and scene properties.
Those who cling to this notion that it is somehow an automatic sign of
something negative are kidding themselves, and really ought to reconsider
what tools they choose to throw away.

Wise words, Mark.

The problem is that some cannot see their way past a means of
ridiculing other people to the value that those tools offer them.

You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a
reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating
the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for
independence.

I fail to see the "moral" difference between looking at a shot on an
LCD and machine-gunning to get one decent shot.

Actually, looking once in awhile is probably far more effective than
machine-gunning 30 badly exposed frames without knowing about it. Or never
checking about it because you were worried that Rita B. might think you were
"chimping." So who's the chimp, anyway? The guy looking at his camera or the
monkey jumping up and down, pointing and screeching at nothing?

Yes, so stupid

I am a cameraman and sometimes I have to cover news...one occation was a
luncheon speech at the local chamber of commerce..One  person speaking at a
podium..
four photogs...ten shots with flash...chimping..ten more shots...chimpimg...
the hole speech!!
Needless to say the newsfootage was pretty "flashy" and useless...Good old
film days there would have been two or three shots and  off to the next
assignement..
Oh yeah, next say there was one picture in the paper....

I'd agree that this is pretty lame.  Once you've checked your settings via
histogram...and when nothing changes in the lighting...there's little reason
to keep checking.

I remember the film days, and there were just as many flashes back
then, too.

So your problem is not with chimping, but with constantly shooting the same
frame over and over. Trouble is, that fleeting expression on someone's face
might be just what the boss is looking for. If you miss it, and the other
paper gets it, you could be looking for another job. Especially if your only
excuse was that you didn't want Rita B. and Benny to think you were stupid.

Since most PJs use Canon, most chimpers will be Canon shooters,
even if Nikon shooters were to chimp twice as often per person.

Wrong vowel. Canon users are chumps, not chimps. :-)

Why not? What's wrong with it? Sounds like a personal problem.

DSLRs have LCDs for a reason. If you don't like yours, don't look at it. But
don't pretend that there is no use for occasionally checking to see if camera
settings are what you thought they were or if you are actually getting the
shots you wanted, especially if you are getting paid for it.

Besides, you are misusing "chimping," which really is where everyone gathers
around the LCD going Ooh-Ooh! It is fun, harmless, and a great social
activity.

So get a life already, instead of worrying about what other people do with
their cameras. It is none of your business anyway.
