After much research and questions I finally bought some new lenses:

I needed a good wide angle, and a macro and it would be good to have
a medium length lens.

In the end for the wide angle I bought the Canon EFS 10-22mm F3.5/4.5
USM which is just excellent even at its widest (see sample image)

For the macro and medium length I got the best of both in the Canon
EF100mm f2.8 Macro USM. I can't say enough good things about this
lens (see sample image)

I looked at sigma, and tamron but in the end I'm glad that I spent
that little extra on the Canon lenses as the quality really shows.

If we ever get any decent light here in Norther England I'll get to
really try them out!

I have this lens - love it.  You will find some CA at the widest focal
lengths (~10-12mm), especially with partial or semi-backlit
subjects/scenes, so be aware of that.

And we care because???? The lenses you bought may well be great but unless
you also have the Tamron and Sigma lenses you talk about you should not
denigrate those lnses like you have because you have not tested them using
the same conditions as the Canon lens. WHat you should have said is that the
lenses you decided to buy are very good and you like them and that they cost
more than the ones you did not buy any more will simply be conjecture and
guessing on your part because the data that I have seen shows the Sigma 70mm
macro to be at least the equal of just about any macro lens on the planet.

Very well said. I had the Sigma 18-125 for Christmas     and very pleased
with it (please see http://djmp.co.uk/slr%201/prague.htm  ) without trying
other lens I can not comment if it is better or not.   I just know that I am
happy with it

Apparently it is a pretty nice lens for the price, sorry you are paying UK
prices though, they suck big time.

Thanks to the internet it's far easier to buy brand new glass online from
outside the UK, as UK prices are a joke to be honest.  OK you don't get a
"UK warranty" but I have not yet needed a lens warranty repair.

Prices here in Australia are not to bad but availability is the killer, I
have bought through B&H and Cameta and only have good things to say about
them, Cameta sent the wrong lens once and paid the cost of sending it back
no problems.

Oh man, I've got an online buddy in South Africa... well nearby... and
the prices are 3x what I'd pay at B&H.
