New Universal Stereoscopic Adapter for your Camera and Camcorder.

There are two mirrors for splitting horizontal view angle into
two parallel views. The mirrors are adjustable by a single lever
that makes the two center axis's parallel for the given camera horizontal
view angle.
The base is controlled by sliding the camera back and forth towards
mirrors. The Camera mounting table has elevation and roll angle tilt
for precise alignment. The slitting mirror assembly has adjustable height
for camera view vertical centering.
The overhead flush light redirect mirror has XYZ adjustment.
There is a tripod socket at the bottom of the camera mounting table
assy.
The unit is made of light-weight PVC and it's weight is:
0.7 kg

The base is adjustable from 20 mm to 45 mm
The camera view angle range is 36 to 60 deg horizontal
Vertical angle supports   from 1:1.5 to 1:1.333  aspect ratios.

I have access to 2 Canon 20Ds and an appropriate mounting rail - what would
it take to "get into sterioscopic imaging"? Is it just software required?

To get the software click on this link.   http://home.cogeco.ca/~grichter1/
It's freeware.

You need LANC controller for synchronizing the camera's shutters.
Appropriate mounting rails should have one of the sockets with 3 degree of
freedom adjustments
for precise alignment of frames.
The cameras should have equal presets for both exposure and zoom.
The build in flash should be disable and external single one used instead.
That should define a proper system.
After you've captured the stereo-pairs there are several method of viewing.
To eliminate vertical disparities first apply lens distortion correction
using image processing software.
Next step is to align images and rotate if necessary to correct for camera's
frames misalignment.
Finally encode it into stereoscopic format of your choice.
There are several free stereo image processing applications but none of them
has a lens distortion correction.

Hope this help.
