I'm considering purchasing a lighting kit.  I need a good book, does anyone
have any recommendations?  I am a total amateur at portrait photography.
thanks blah

get a rudimentary book on lighting, one with setup diagrams, then do what
the pros do....copy something else they saw in a magazine!

borders or B&N will have a few guidebooks. they are all the same though. and
before considering a "kit", consider one light with a couple of light
modifiers. i know a few people that have lights collecting dust, because
they can't think of a scenario where they need three or four lights. and if
you do, then you will have done what i stated at the beginning.

actually, learing to artificially light will help you learn to light better
in natural light too.

I'm no expert, but the definitive book on lighting is often said to be
Hunter and Fuqa's "Light: Science and Magic"  It doesn't just tell you how,
it tells you why.

That's a great book, for somebody who wants to know the underlying
principles and get a broad introduction to all the techniques available.
It's not a cookbook for getting a few specific results -- which might
be a better way for some people to start out (depends on how you learn;
I'm better off with the decent theoretical book from the beginning).

Thanks David: let me rephrase that:

"It doesn't tell you how, it tells you why."  If you still need to know how,
like most of us, check out the other books listed in this thread.  But the
book I mentioned is still worth a read...  ;-)
