For some reason the counter in the display on my EOS-350D stays at
"999" despite taking new shots, but only in the "green" and other
"automatic" modes. In the "creative" modes I believe it advances.

I seem to recall having read something about a limitation to the number
of shots or something like that, but I don't know the details or what
has to be done to rectify the situation.

It only has three digits, it can't display anything larger.  If it thinks
you have 1,000 or more shots left, it will just say "999".

That makes sense, but the memory card only has room for something like
300 shots!

In that case, sounds like someone changed it to small JPG, or similar.

I'll bet that you have it set to RAW+JPG.  When you switch to the
creative zone, it will only do JPG, so the camera will (rightly) assume that
you have room for 3, 4, or 5 times as many shots.

So called "Creative Zone" allows for RAW images. The presets don't.

Ah!! yes, that's right. I do in fact shoot RAW+JPG, but not quite
having learnt how to use a flash properly in creative zone I tend to
switch over to "green box" mode in those situations.
I forgot that I lose RAW shots whenever I do flash photography that way.

Silly me! I could easily have set it to "P" mode instead, where I do
get RAW+JPG in addition to automatic flash settings.

.... and now the number has changed to "969" in the preset modes.
I guess a 4 GB memory card allows quite a bit more than 999 shots, even
when set to the highest resolution.

Set the quality back to high.
It's likely been set to small, and has room for more shots than the three
digits can show.
Normal.
