Ok so got my brand new Canon Rebel XTi/400D
I have the EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM Lense and a 2 GIG CF Card
Looking for suggestions on accessories
I know I need a case (perhaps a backpack stile one which can also
handle my laptop), and a Tripod. I really like doing night and HDR
photagraphy.
Later on, i will most likely have other question in particular
regarding what is the benefit of shooting in RAW vs JPEG (other then
compression)
Any and all help is ofcourse greatly appriciated.

Well, all of this has been covered very recently in this very newsgroup
- accessories, lenses, and raw vs .jpeg. You might start by perusing
existing posts.

A dedicated flash would be a good idea. Canon Speedlite 430EX or
580EX.

With the plunging price of memory, a second memory card would be an important
add-on. In the (admittedly unlikely) event of a card failure, you have a
spare.
When I bought my 20D, the first thing I acquired was a second battery.

I'll let other, more informed photogs answer THAT one.
I have always shot BOTH. Admittedly, I have yet to "need" the RAW image but,
with the incredibly low price of storage (hard-disk), I keep them "just in
case".
Good luck and have fun!

The best way to find out what extras you might need is to get out
there and start taking photos. After you have taken and processed a
few thousand you may get an idea of what you want.
Until then it is all guesswork.

You'll have fun with that!

Go out and shoot. Enjoy the process.
As you gain experience, the need for accessories will become evident
to you.
Will you need a flash? Maybe. If you do indoor shooting, probably.
A bag, for sure. But wait a while for the really good one. Get a less
expensive one, a little larger than you think you'll need. As you gain
more 'stuff', it will get smaller. Then you can look at better bags.
More memory cards are a must; at least one. A card reader will be a
BIG help.
A spare battery is also a must.
From there, let your dissatisfaction be your guide. Do you need a
longer lens? A wider one? A macro? A lightweight tripod, or a more
sturdy, heavier one? (Or a light, sturdy, expensive one?) A better
flash?
Don't let others decide for you. A lens you don't use is wasted money.
And, above all: Have fun!
