Hi
My budget doesn't allow me to go much >200$.
I'm considering to buy one of the following
Sigma APO MACRO SUPER II 70-300mm f/4-5.6
Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM EF
Which one would be a better choice? Maybe some other in 200 range?
thank you

I have the Canon lens. It's nothing to write home about but it's good enough
for the little, personal telephoto work I do. It does NOT have a macro
capability and I haven't missed it.

The Sigma doesn't have true 'macro' either. I'd also look at the Tamron
70-300 Di, which is cheaper than the Sigma, and also just as good
optically. All of them will be best described as a bit 'soft' at 300mm,
the Canon gains the basic USM motor and a bigger hit on the wallet.
Personally I went for the Tamron until I could afford something like the
70-200 f4 L.

I had a 75-300 canon and it did a good job at about 150mm.
If you want to see an example go to my site and see the "photos recente"
and the second pic :quai" was shot with this lens at about 150mm.

Hello J.
I've a feeling that some reviewers prefer the Canon 90 - 300 lens rather
than the 75 - 300 lens.
Sorry but I can't point you to any specific review but I'd recently bought a
75 - 300 when I learned about this preference.
Oh - anyone mentioned to you the usual Sigma problem? They don't have a
licence for the EOS mount so they reverse engineer it for their lenses. This
means that their lenses may not work on new Canon bodies. I've a friend who
bought a second-hand Sigma 500mm lens and it works on her EOS 30 (film) body
with restrictions on the modes she can use.
Have a search for Sigma re-chipping on the web. Sigma UK will do it for the
cost of postage if you're the original owner or about £40 if you are not (or
have lost your receipt).
Regards, Ian.

I prefer and suggest the Sigma. Just be sure that it is the APO version.

I don't know but I do like the 75-300! Here is a shot taken in the Florida
Everglades from a moving tram at 300 mm:

I also have the big, white, expensive EF 100 - 400 and have carefully
compared the two at 300 mm using a tripod and can say that the white lens is
sharper, but not by leaps and bounds. The big heavy beast does focus
faster, however, and that is why I bought it (for wildlife where low latency
is important). IS is nice, too.
I do use one Sigma lens and it is fine but occasionally locks up (Err 99).

I have a Nikon D50 and am considering a 300mm telephoto lens. The example that
Charles Schuler has is an outstanding photo! I have been looking at the Nikkor
70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (a little on the expensive side for me at
~$530), the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED AF Zoom at ~$310, and the Sigma AF
70-300mm f/4-5.6 Macro Super II Zoom Lens for Nikon at ~$140. I've also read
somewhere that the Nikkor at ~$530 may not be useable on the D50. Suggestions,
please!

I've got the Sigma lens and like it for all the use I've gotten out of
it (on a Rebel XT)... While it seems a little ludicrous to be taking
macro shots from a meter or two away, the macro feature seems to be one
of the reasons this lens gets put onto the camera (macro mode between
200mm and 300mm only).
