N.Y. Times claims it's all over for Canon and Nikon!

The Times today had a full page add claiming, "If you want clear pictures
you don't want a Canon or Nikon."  They also claim that only 20% of Canon
and Nikon lenses have IS/VR.  They also claim that the Sony A100 is the only
camera to give clear sharp images with all their lenses since it has IS/VR
in the body.  After seeing this add it put the fear of god into me thinking
that it's time to start dumping all my Nikon and Canon crap and buy a Sony
A100.  I know the A100 isn't really going to give Canon or Nikon any
competition, but it was funny seeing this full page add.

* Sigh*-I've been answering a lot of how can I get your product to work
with my brand new A100.....guess what its "NOT" compatible because
of the proprietary features Sony incorporates in their product.

Buy the camera and forget using anything but the makers accessories.

I wish people would fully research stuff before buying it.

I think the new Pentax has a body shaker...

I have both a Nikon and a Sony and I'd say the Sony pictures always look grainy
when I zoom in... but I do prefer the Sony raw converter, even better than
Adobe.   Wish it worked on Nikon...

And as for the blur - the anti-shake works quite well, you can get 3 stops if
you aren't drinking, but the auto focus hunts like a bitch in room light!

So you have to shoot at low ISO for low noise, so most of my close ups are
blurred due to DOF due to low F numbers...  If you need the anti-shake, you are
probably shooting noise with a high ISO because you need a small F stop, so the
shutter speed is low...

so the whole thing is a pain...

Actually, I want a 5D or something... I'm saving my money but will wait for next
years model announcements.

I want full frame!!

2007 will be an interesting year.  Expect Sony and Nikon to offer
larger-than-APS Sony-made sensors.

Canon will introduce the full frame EOS 3D with the 5D body shape,
plus full weather sealing and 16.8 MP, and the EOS 1Ds MkIII with
somewhere between 22 and 25 MP.  Expect the 5D to continue, but at a
lower price point.

Do you think this sensor will match Canon's?

If the 5D comes down in price - that's fine!

No idea, but I doubt it will match Canon's low noise at higher ISOs.

Depends if it's CMOS. The R1's CMOS sensor is actually much better than
the A100's CCD sensor at ISO 400-1600, and goes up to 3200 without too
much detail-masking noise. If Sony is developing a full frame CCD based
on the 6 megapixel CCD - which would mean a 12 megapixel full frame -
then the high ISO noise of that CCD is already a fair match for Canon
although long exposures are not as successful. If they are developing
one based on the R1's CMOS, and have been studying Canon's methods for
pre-adjusting pixel by pixel thresholds and zeroing hot pixels, they
could improve on the R1, make a 16 megapixel full framer, and maybe
catch up with Canon on 1600 ISO noise at that density.

Maybe not but luckily that is not the only feature cameras are used for.

Obviously the article is junk, but according to dpreview, Sony's Alpha
does have resolution figures comparable to a Canon 5D because of a weak
AA filter and less in-camera NR.
Of course, noise is another issue...

As dragged through other groups, and pointed out there, this was an ad
by Sony, nothing to do with Times other than they accepted $ to print
their ad.

Sheesh.

She's talking about the physical newspaper.  They don't post full page adds
online--no one looks at them.

Don't panic.  It was an ad by some competing company (Sony,
I think) trying to convince folks that image stabilization
should be built into the camera and not into the lens.

Ha Ha, you should have bought the Sony I guess, then you could have bought a
new car as well.

As do all cameras in its class...
Like the Canon 300d/350d/400d and Nikon D40/D50.
