I recently bought a D50 online (first mistake - have nothing good to sa
about Express Cameras!!) The salesman was obnoxious and pushy - an
didn't do half of what he said he'd do once I threatened to cancel m
order entirely. Anyway - I ordered the camera with the 18-55 lens bu
for my aggravation he said he was going to upgrade my lens. He sent m
a Sigma 28-70mm F2.8-4 DG. I am new to all of this (stuck on bedrest s
my research has been limited to a few in store experiences prior t
bedrest) - and i want to know what are the major differences betwee
the two lenses? Did he really do me a favor? I mainly take picture
of my family.
You all seem to have a lot of knowledge, so I figured I might get a
honest answer here.
Thank you!!

It's probably not too bad a lens, what you are missing is 17-27 wide
angle, the 28mm is like a normal 50mm on film. The faster f/2.8 at 28mm
will be handy for low light indoors family shots but you won't be able
to back up far enough for group shots, vacation scenery, etc. The reason
the salesman was pushing for this is he probably made more money on it
than on a nikon lens. The other problem is the Sigma won't sell for much
if you want to unload it.

/If/ it produces sharp images at f/2.8. Non-EX Sigmas very seldom do.

No. The Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S DX is $150 at reputable
dealers, and excellent value. The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG usually
sell for $130 (i.e. $20 less). I haven't used it myself, but non-EX
lenses from Sigma do not have a stellar reputation. In addition,
the Sigma's range of focal lengths are IMHO inappropriate for a
general purpose lens for a D50 - it goes from about "normal" to
short tele. The Nikkor suits the D50 much better, and would have
given you wide angle as well - which is nice for indoor group
shots.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but you asked for a honest
opinion.
