On a 10D it has few rivals. It is absolutely the equal in sharpness to
Canon's "L" series of the same dimensions. The only point I had with mine
was the rather 'gritty' focus motor but it smoothed out and quietened down
after a while. If you are going to use it on a DSLR, have a look at the
24~70 f2.8. It too is a very sharp lens.
Considered(ing) the 24-70 als, but am concerned about the size - am looking
for compact. How do the compare in that area?

Saw someone with a black Canon 300D + Battery grip + Sigma 24-70mm
f2.8. The system looked like a 1Ds to me from a distance ;) And the
lens looks HUGE even from a distance. Sorry, have nothing to contribute
about the lens quality.
I am considering the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 vs Sigma 28-70 f2.8 vs Tamron
28-75mm f2.8 for my Maxxum 5. Any comments?
