No Olympus E-400s end up Stateside in stores

More or less supports the idea that the production run of these cameras
was so low only a select few European and Asians stores got them.
"Grey" market bodies are non-existent.

Proves nothing! It is not economical to make a tiny run.

However sometimes early on a problem surfaces.

I would believe that, look at the Canon 20D they had to issue 3 firmware
updates while PhotoKina 2004 was running. By the end of the run there
was 8(?) firmware updates for the 20D. I understand there is a sensor
issue with the Oly E-400

As Olympus announced at Photokina, the Olympus E-400 is available in
Europe and Asia only. There is no mystery or anything else about that,
it is as expected!
In German online stores, the Olympus E-400 seems to be very good
available (see
http://www.preissuchmaschine.de/psm_frontend/main.asp?produkt=394734),
and I know many people who did already get one.

The reason that the E-400 will not be available in the USA is that the
US Olympus importer decided that the camera would not sell well in the
USA. Apparently the reason given was that it was too small for
American buyers.

Back in the 1990s, Olympus UK declined to offer the OM-2000 35mm SLR
because it was unlikely to be reliable. The camera was made by Cosina
and was basically junk, so it was a good call by Olympus UK. However,
Olympus UK came under a lot of pressure from Olympus in Japan to sell
the camera.

OK, this statement is pretty close to the official statement, where
Olympus stated that the E-500 sells still very well in the US, so that
they don't want to worsen the E-500 sellings by introducing the E-400 in
the US ...

True or not, a German photo shop dealer told me that the E-500 didn't
sell very well regarding his shop compared to Nikon or Canon sellings,
so this could be an explanation - if this is representative for the
European market - why Olympus decided to stop the E-500 in Germany to
introduce the E-400.
