Prestige Camera BEWARE

I ordered from Prestige Camera.  The salesman was rude and lied, but I
did get my camera.  I got a good price but had to tolerate
high-pressure sales. Plus they lied to me about requiring a signature
from UPS so the $800 package was left on my doorstep!  They state
"ships immediately" but they held my order until they can do the sales
pitch.  Resellerratings got a lot of fraudulent "satisfied ratings" so
they are refusing more ratings from Prestige Camera.  I thought I
would post my comments here instead.  If you are considering buying
from a New York camera shop, they are probably the same outfit
operating under different names, like  Broadway Photo, Preferred
Photo, A&M, Photo World, etc.

If you order from these folks, use a Discover credit card to protect
your purchase and beware of their practices.

And do not provide them with the number on the back of the card if they
ask for it.

All the websites are asking for it.... Are you saying it is unwise to
disclose over the phone?

Yes!  You are always at risk when you give your credit card number.  It is
easy for a waitress at a restaurant to steal and use/sell your number.

Sure they're asking for it because if they screw you, you can't do a
charge back when you provide them with that security code.

With DiscoverCard you can download a free utility that will fill in online
forms automatically and generate a one-time use credit card number.  It even
generates the 3-digit security code.   This gives added protection in the
event the seller's database is stolen.  I use this one-time use number for
ALL my online purchases and bill-pay so my credit card number is always
protected online.  I do not even have to enter my credit card number to log
in (but I do use an easy-to-remember username/password).   I'm not sure if
Visa or MasterCard provides this.

So why do you  keep these shysters in business by buying from them?
If any one treated me this way, the phone would get hung up and the
transaction cancelled.  If consumers stopped doing business with
crooks, they would be out of business and we can stop putthing up with
this crap.  I put my business with shops and sellers that treat me well
and offer a fair price.  Patronizing these less than honorable thieves
is sort of like paying the neighborhood vandal not to throw eggs at
your car every morning.  Better to put the vandal out of business.

Customers select them because they have the lowest prices if you search with
www.pricegrabber.com .
They place their order, then must face the salespitch and und up buying
accessories they don't really need.  It's too late at that point.  If there
were more careful shoppers who are aware of the bait-and-switch scheme this
would ot happen.  Sometimes a local shop will honor an online quote.
Surprisingly, Sears did when I bought a $4000 plasma TV.  But, maybe local
camera shop owners are different or they simply can not compete.

The very old saying is, if a deal looks to good to be true, it
probably is.. Easy to say, I know, as we are all looking for the deal of
a lifetime. I have been lured in too..
Now, when I look at pricegrabber etc. and see someone much below a
well known reputable dealer (Newegg etc.) I almost automatically figure
there is a scam going on......and figure the savings is not worth the
risk.............
