Newbie question for Rebel XT owners

I just took my new Digital Rebel XT out of the box and read the manual, and
thought I had figured out the basics.  I have been taking some pictures with
the camera and they have come out quite nicely, for the most part.  The
problem that I can't figure out how to solve is the delay that I experience
each time I press the button.  The camera beeps for several seconds before
taking the pictures.  I can't figure out how to get rid of this delay, or
minimize it.  I have tried auto and manual focus, but it still persists.

I can't even take a photo of my house.  I wait until the street is clear,
then snap the photo from across the street.  By the time the camera actually
takes the picture, there are cars on the street and I end up taking pictures
of them, because they are between me and my house.

I am on my 3rd reading of the instruction manual, but can't figure out how
to get rid of this annoyance.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have the self timer on. Page 48 in my manual.

I agree.

The Canon XT does not beep more than once in normal shooting modes
with one press of the shutter button. A single autofocus confirmation
beep is emitted and that's it. If the camera is beeping more than
once, then either the shutter button is being released or the camera
is in self-timer mode.

I agree with this also.

Yes.
Take it out of "self-timer" mode!
:)

THanks for all the responses.  That was it...the self-timer mode.  I never
thought it would come from the factory in that mode.  I took it out of the
box and started shooting, thinking everything would be set to the default
settings.

The date and time was also set correctly.  Perhaps someone at the camera
shop was messing around with it before we picked it up or something.

Many thanks.

It is not an annoyance.  There is a time-delay button and icon on the
display to show time-delay.  This is so you can take your own picture.  You
should be able to take a picture in less than a second by slowly pressing
the shutter button.  I found that the pdf version of the manual is much
easier to read and search (click on the binoculars to search in Acrobat
reader).
