Just looking around for lens availability in case I did make the switch
to Pentax sometime in the future. At least here in the US I'm not
finding any longer Pentax-branded lenses, just Sigmas and Tamrons.
I'm still not all that familiar with the mount so what lenses do you
Pentax users have in your stable?
In my case, if I ever made the switch to the K10D, I'd start with with
the 16mm-45mm, the 40mm pancake, and the 100mm macro but after that I
can't find anything. I'd like something in the 24mm-105mm and
80mm-200mm ranges that has full autofocus and metering.

Those don't really help. I forgot about the Pentax announcements:
Model name (tentative): smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8ED AL[IF]
Launch date: March 2007
Model name (tentative): smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8ED [IF]
Launch date: March 2007
Model name (tentative): smc PENTAX-DA* 60-250mm F4ED [IF]
Launch date: March 2007
If I were to make the switch and the above lenses turn out to be nice
I'd start with the:
16-50mm
40mm pancake
100mm macro
60-250mm

For medium to long zooms, I have the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG and the Sigma
135-400 f/4.5-5.6. The 70-200 is excellent. The 135-400, as you might
expect, is a bit soft and you can use it only on relatively bright days
(unless you're shooting the moon, of course, and don't need faster shutter
speeds). But I think for the price it's still a good buy.

I have the 16~45 constant F/4 and it's a great lens, very sharp at any
aperture, but as large as a 200mm zoom. Hope the new PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm
F2.8ED AL[IF] is not even larger.
My manual Zenitar 16mm, when defished, seems a bit wider angle than the
above at 16mm position.

It is a nice lens but I think a touch over priced for F4.0, I am thinking
that I probably should have gone with the 18-50mm F2.8, Sigma, it is pretty
sweet. I have ordered a 18-125mm Sigma with my K10D.

Size it would appear is the price you pay for constant aperture and quality.

Apples and oranges.

The Zenitar seems to be about 21mm equivalent after defishing whereas the
16-45 is 24-68 equivalent.

Yeah. It's a fisheye lens. Of course it's got a wider angle of view.

I wish they'd make a nice 24mm. I'd buy an FA 24/2 in a heartbeat if I
could find one.

You should persevere by setting up a search on eBay and regularly
checking the stock at KEH. You might also get a result with a WTB ad
at the PDML. Most will agree that the 24mm f/2 FA is an absolute gem.
I regret not buying one when I had the chance, but my Leica 24mm vies
now for the title of my most often used lens with the 35mm f/2
Summicron. Sadly, the Leica 24mm was several times the price of the
Pentax 24mm and it only goes to f/2.8, but it is actually sharper wide
open than any other 24mm lens available for the 35mm format, at any
aperture.
May I suggest the Pentax K 24mm f/3.5 as a slightly easier to obtain
alternative to the 24mm f/2 FA? It lacks AF and has no electronic
contacts, so is limited in its ability on Pentax AF and digital
bodies. But it is optically a very good lens, and you could use it
until you find a 24mm f/2 FA.

I've been trying to run in to one of those as well. I don't like to buy
stuff over ebay, which leaves me with a few local used camera store
options and craigslist. I'm no stranger to using all-manual lenses on
newer bodies...
The 21mm is too wide, the 31mm is too narrow... :-) The DA 12-24mm looks
promising, but it's not cheap, and I'd rather spend that money on the
DA* 16-50/2.8.

I understand your concern about eBay. Being sure of a good deal is
getting more and more difficult.

Choices, choices! I wish you luck in your quest.
