Battery Charger

To cover all bases, I'm carrying three battery chargers in my camera bag.
One for my Canon 30D batteries (BP511), one for my Sony P&S camera
(NP-BG1), and one for rechargeable AA batteries for flash and misc.

There's gotta be a better way! Anyone know of a 'universal' charger, or at
least some more flexible system?

TIA.

I know the problem.  You might have purchased a P&S that uses AA's.  I
do not know of a DLSR that uses AA's.

All the Pentax DSLRs  to date have used AAs, although this is
about to change - the forthcoming K10D uses a proprietary battery.

And almost any DSLR that can use a battery grip such as the Canon
Rebel XT/i, 20D, 30D, 5D, Nikon D80, D200, etc. They include an AA
battery cartridge that inserts into the grip and allows alkaline,
Ni-Cad,or Ni-MH cells to be used, as well as the option to use the
regular Li-Ion battery packs.

I haven't tried it with my 30D, but folks with the 20D & grip report very
short battery life with AAs in the grip.

I've read the same thing.

It seems there's a design issue with the grips from Canon - using any
type of AA cell seems to produce very short shooting times. The
battery level indicator may show a low charge, even with fresh cells
in the grip. I've never really had the opportunity to test it since I
didn't keep a grip on my XT. However, I remember using AA cells, both
alkaline and Ni-Cad, in my old film bodies with grips and they all
worked well.

It doesn't make any sense really - a fresh set of Ni-MH cells will
give a reading of 8.4v to the camera, which is identical to what the
Li-Ion packs produce when fully charged. The voltage drop of the Ni-MH
is a bit faster at first, but it should not cause a "dead" condition
after a dozen shots since the dead battery pack voltage is about 6.5v
which is close to what dead Ni-MH cells produce in a set of six.

Makes me wonder if Canon designed it like that on purpose to get
people to use their proprietary Li-Ion packs instead of AA cells
(which would be nothing more than a greedy attitude).

Late reply but a lot of the Canon PowerShot G* models use the same BP511
batteries as the 30D etc.

The vertical grip for the 30D allows AA use, though I can't say how
efficient that is.  It works fairly well with my 5D/grip, but I haven't used
it for a full discharge, and so can't comment on efficiency of AA use.  I am
assuming it isn't the best, and bring the AA magazine only as a back-up.  If
you go this route, you'll definitely want to avoid alkaline, and use NiMh.

It does begin to be annoying while traveling.  This is one reason that
attracted me to Canon's M-80 media storage device--because it uses the same
battery as the 5D/30D.  -But alas...it isn't being marketed to the US(!!).

I've got a generic LiIon charger that I picked up at Best Buy.  It will
charge my BP511, Sony camcorder batteries, and my SD-110 battery.  Won't
do AA's, but those are NiMH.
