Has anyone gotten the Canon
Canon EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM lens?
If so, how do you like it?  Anyone know of
a review comparing it to the f/2.8 version?

B&H Photo does not seem to have it (they have the non-IS
version).  Is it available yet?

Thanks,
Roger

Due out next month.  IS gives four stops?  Sounds interesting.

According to my (Canon Pro) dealer, it's available early 2007, current
price EUR 1133.00 (incl 19% VAT).
If things go as planned, I'll be handling one on Friday. I may be able
to
take some shots, but I don't expect the shop interior to provide a
nice
subject.

I bought one yesterday from the local camera store. I'm a user not a
tester and I think the new EF 70-200mm f - 4L is the greatest. My
guesstimeter tells me anyone getting this lens would not be unhappy
using it.

They're talking about the IS version.

Yeah Mark, I know. The IS version is what I bought.

You didn't include "IS" in your otherwise-complete lens description...so it
that wasn't clear.
Glad to hear it's already available, and that you're happy with it.

Sorry about that Mark but I thought I had it covered when I said I
bought the _new_ lens. But you're right. I should have been more
complete in the description. As for the lens, I've used it for a short
time but time enough to convince me it's a big time winning lens. I've
used the F-2.8L IS lens and now the F-4L IS lens and while I feel both
are equally excellent lenses I much prefer hand hold a camera with the
F-4L IS lens. I must say, IMO, if it were possible for one to try the
lens before buying, they would would be hooked to buy.

Yes:
   http://www.goecker.dk/Content/Producttests/Canon70-2004L.asp

It is in danish from a reliable pro dealer, and states that:
Comparing tests shots with EF 70-200/2.8L IS shows a little better
performance for the 4.0. Maybe not much, but it is a step better. Studio
shots are done with EOS 5D.

I'd have liked to have seen some comparison images, though.

How valid do you think comparison images are in a magazine or on-line?
First, the resolution on-screen, or the variability in the printing process
could easily muddle any differences.  Second, you have to assume that the
example of each lens that was tested is representative of the breed.

Well, it would certainly tell me more than some guy saying that the f4
version was better than the f2.8 version, if only by a little.  There were
no references to whether he was speaking of them wide open, or both at f4,
f8 or what.  It's true that PhotoZone has the f4 non IS outperforming the
f2.8 IS,  but I'd like to see something more definitive than, like I said,
just relying on what somebody says.

The sentense after the one I translated states:
"All pictures are, as always, displayed in the sales department, where you
are welcome to see them".

I'm sure the invitation applies to you to :-)
