I've been considering upgrading to the Nikon D2x, but am wondering
whether there is a successor in the offing. Has anyone heard anything
other than pure speculation?
Thanks.

Sorry, I meant to ask whether there is anything akin to a D3X coming.

Wait 6 months the price will drop, then they will offer a replacement
for about the current selling price (at that time) of the D2Xs.

They certainly have one in development, according to the rumour mill.
Going by Nikon's usual timescales it'll be the end of next year, but
no-one outside Nikon knows for sure.

No. No one has heard anything other than pure speculation. Those who do
know are not saying anything. Nikon and Canon both are almost as
secretive as Apple Computer. If anyone who actually knew anything
blabbed about something like the D3x the consequences would be
immediate and severe.
So, what you have to do is look at things like trademark applications,
patent applications, Nikon's projected sales, Nikon's historical
product development cycle, etc. Right now everything looks like Nikon
is working on projected sales for the D80 and possibly a D60. A D3x
might be lost in the noise, though.
The D3x has been predicted to be released for a couple years now, and
no one has seen it yet. No one has even seen a sensor that might be put
in a D3x. The thing is, the D2xs is approaching the end of Nikon's
product development cycle.

Eh? The D2x was announced on 16 September 2004, i.e. two years ago.
Andrew.

Talking about the D3, D3x, and D3h, all of which people have been
predicting will be released any day now for years. Yes, we all know
about the D2x.

His very valid point was that it seems highly improbable that
discussion of the imminent release of a D3 model started one
month after the D2x was announced.
It probably started about a year ago. It will probably continue
for at least another year...

You have a poor memory. There was a lot of discussion that Nikon would
release the D2 and the D3 at the same time.

One other thing. Even if the D3x was introduced tomorrow, you would
probably have to wait six months to a year to get one.

Upgrade to D2x from what?
I don't believe that Nikon have or need a replacement for D2xs. The reason
is that there is no new technology to put on. D2xs have already everything
that existing technology has.

I'm sure I heard something about a high-res LBCAST sensor which will be used
in Nikon's pro bodies.

Yes they will use that in the D3H probably which historically the DxH
come out 6 months to a year before a DxX....I doubt the LBCAST sensor
will be used in the D3X because of the resolution....The sensor will
probably be a 10MP high speed sensor that will replace the 4mp in the
D2H, that MP size is a step down in specs to the current D2Xs even
though its output will probably look as good or better with better high
ISO images.

It certainly sounds very tempting. I recently upgraded from d70s to d80 and
the 10mp files seem HUGE compared to the 6mp I'm used to, so I'd not be too
worried about not having 12mp++ if I was in the position to afford a pro
body.
