Worth upgrading from 3 to 5?

Adobe don't have a comparison chart or summary of what's so great about
5 that I'd jump from 3.

Thanks,
Alan.

er, no.  I'm actually waiting for a CS2 sale to buy that.  But if 5.0
would have CYM info, for example, that alone would be worth $69.99 to me
for skin tones.  (It, like 3.0 has RGB info, but not CYM).

Maybe this will help:

Thanks.  Seems to have all kinds of General workflow recipe improvements
but little to help me with more exacting work.   3. Will do until I get CS2.

Cheers,
Alan

I never tried 4 since 3 was such a bloated slug. Was 4 any better or just
more code bloat full of features no one will use?

3 is a bloated slug on a Pentium Celeron at 2.4 GHz but runs nice and
smooth on a Dual Core Athlon at 2.2 GHz.

But your comment reflects why I never upgraded to 4 and why I want to
know the benefits of 5 before even considering it.  Given the link that
Bill Crocker posted and what I found there, there is no good reason for
upgrading.

I've been waiting for the next CS upgrade so that I could buy the "exit
price" CS2...

Cheers,
Alan

Newer versions with more features don't always equate to added bloat.
Sometimes they actually clean up bugs, and optimize code, and in rare cases
re-write it in a totally different programming language, resulting in a much
faster, smoother performing application.

As I have v2.0. whose browsing facility is so slow one could fall asleep, is
it faster in V5.0? Old Paintshop Pro beats hell out of it for fast browsing.

When I shot jpeg I used irfanview for browsing and launched photoshop
elements 2.0 with Ctrl+E. I still have PE 2.0 on my machine because it
launches so fast for quick things - I love the paste as new image - and I
also have CS2 as well as the old CS (so I can work on images while CS2 is in
batch).

Alan,
If you need the most current Adobe RAW converter you may have to
upgrade. I also understand the have curves and a couple of other
features that used to be only available in Photoshop. PSCS2 really
wants at least 1.5g of RAM. Works well on my 2.7 Athlon with that. Is a
little slower on the Pentium Mobile 1.7 at work with 1g of RAM. If you
really want Photoshop, Adobe used to upgrade from PSE for $350-400,
worth checking the Adobe site.

I just added 1 GB to my dual core Athlon for a total of 2 Gb.  So no
issue there.

I know of that upgrade, I'm just parsimoniously waiting for the "end of
line" sale they usually have before a major CS upgrade.

There's also the "student" angle where I can use my son as the student.

Cheers,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Have you looked at Lightroom? I have had a short run with beta 4 and
it looks OK although needs a decent PC to run. Supposed to be released
1st Q 2007.

I'm reluctant to leave the Adobe/Photoshop world as I'm used to it,
happy with it.  I've tried other photo editors and I'm never as happy
with the methods nor the results as I am with PS.

'just have to wait for a clearance of CS2...

Cheers,
Alan

Got a student or teacher in the household?
PS CS2 = $290, full CS2 = $380
http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/market.html?category_id=267840

Or this promo that's targeted at Sony Vaio users with PSE bundled.  No
idea if they match the PSE serial number against Sony OEM licenses

That's an idea ... my son is definitely a student.

Isn't this a DSLR group? :-P :-)

Indeed it is and PS Elements is a photo editing tool that reads directly
from my camera.  Relevant, IOW.
